Culture Ministry to construct new art gallery

BANGKOK, 6 September 2011 (NNT) – The Office of Contemporary Art and Culture (OCAC) under the Ministry of Culture will construct a big art gallery on Ratchadamnoen Road in Bangkok to honour His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej upon his 85th birthday anniversary next year.

According to Culture Minister Sukumol Kunplome, OCAC Director Prisana Pongtadsirikul reported her that the office is working on a project to construct a contemporary art gallery on Ratchadamnoen Road to meet a demand for a space to display art works by contemporary artists.

The contemporary art gallery hence will be constructed allowing both Thai and foreign artists to show their art works. This art gallery will be the centre for contemporary art exhibition and will become a new tourist attraction for both locals and foreigners alike.

The new art gallery project is designed to facilitate Thailand in its role as host to the international arts festival of Asia next year, and to honour HM the King upon his 85th birthday anniversary.

The new art gallery will not duplicate the contemporary art gallery project at the Thailand Cultural Centre which will take four more years to complete. The minister said problems at this site will be solved later on.

Over 200 million baht budget will be used to renovate an old building on Ratchadamnoen Road and turn it into the contemporary art gallery with a total display space of 5,000 square-meters.
