Haha. All their customers will be getting one of those sooner or later.

Santander offshore has to be the world's rudest and most invasive bank. They require at least 10 times as much irrelevant and pointless information about customers than any other bank, and have more rules and regulations about how it is provided also.

Santander offshore are a complete load of bankers.

I received one , but cannot see on the letter where its mandatory to have to send them the same information they all ready have . :(

It's true. I suspect that all ALIL/BBI customers will get one sooner or later.

I told them what they could do with their requirements, and included a scale diagram for clarity.

I had an online account but received an email a few weeks back saying that the new system would require you to get a code by text message every time you wqant to log in. And that would require a UK mobile number.

So I've moved the money out to an account in another bank.

I had one of these letters back in February and when I told them there's no change in my details they told me to send new confirmations or they would freeze the money in the accounts.

Hardly a serious threat to anyone with a time-deposit. :)

Spoke to Customer Services today. They are 'real' letters. They said if you continue to ignore them they will eventually block your account. As Darrel said they advised this would not affect people with timed deposits. If you have normal accounts I suggest you contact them. I got away with a copy of my pension income letter and a request of 25 pounds for EMS - They agreed!.

Many customers had called them that there accounts had vanished - like mine - they said there was an IT problem and assured me it was now fixed!!.

........... a request of 25 pounds for EMS .............

What is EMS?

Registered mail service. Cannot remember what the E stands for. It only cost 100 baht or so.

Just checked - Express Mail Service

That is NOT the registered address of A&L... this reeks of a scam to me. I had one request to update my info on the genuine A&L / Santander website, and everything was fine from there on in. The correct company registered address is:

Santander UK plc,

Customer service centre,

Carlton Park,

Narborough,

Leicester,

LE19 0AL.

Santander offshore have a serious customer relations problem (as indeed does Santander generally). They seem to think that they are doing savers some sort of favour by letting them make deposits. They really need to wake up.

I have been a A&L customer for more than 20 years , and totally agree that their offshore area ( Alliance & Leicester Isle of Man ) has never been easy to deal with, and their attitude is one of , look we are doing you a favour. Trying to communicate or get an answer to a question is like pulling teeth . If I could find an alternative to them I would

move my money , but it seems that many other names in this type of market are just as bad .

I sent my info back 27th of last month, and just received this :annoyed:

THey put a block on my account for over a year and despite many new pins arriving they never worked, in the end I went into a local branch and had the money transfered to another bank. I was with Giro and A & L for 35 years, this lot Sanatander are useless, incompetent and offer service that would seem bad even in Thailand. Glad to shut of them, I would you all to cut the cord, they not worth a monkey -ank.

Ive looked and looked for an alternative similar online account , but my being a permanent resident in Thailand and not returning to the Uk very often, applying and being accepted for a new account , is some thing ive not managed to as yet do, :(

Are you talking about onshore or offshore accounts?

All the offshore banks (CI, IOM) will open an account for you (albeit only if you jump through flaming hoops for Santander).

Some onshore UK banks will also open accounts, but not all. You have to wade through the T&Cs to find the ones that will.

It also depends on the type of account you want.

Hi Darrel, my A&L Isle of Man offshore on line internet account, is called eSaver Offshore Flexible Monthly Income , and currently paying interest of 2.69% [ no deduction of tax ] , so I am looking for some thing similar just to try and cut the chord with A&L , they are just a pain in the backside I could do with out :annoyed:

I recommend Nationwide International in the IOM and Co-op Bank in Guernsey but you will need to keep checking their web sites almost weekly to see what new offers have been released - I avoid BOSI because of stealth drops in interest rates and a real lack of customer service and A & L also. HSBC on shore will let you open a non resident account quite easily which may or may not suit.

I avoid BOSI

BOSI no longer really exist. They first merged with the Halifax to form HBOS, then, this year, HBOS merged with LloydsTSB to form ..... LloydsTSB.

So to fill out the offshore list:

LloydsTSB Intl

Nationwide Intl

Coop Intl

A&L Intl

Skipton Intl

Bank of Ireland Intl

AIB Intl

Clydesdale Bank Intl

Standard Bank

Britannia Intl

Irish Nationwide

Zurich Bank Intl

Investec Bank Intl

Kleinwort Benson

Norwich & Peterborough BS Intl

HSBC Intl

Barclays Intl

RBS Intl

NatWest Intl

IOM Bank

All will open accounts for UK expats. Not all pay any interest worth having though.

Thanks Darrel, I'll go through the list , I'd love to kick A&L into touch, ive just been looking at a few UK money forums, and nearly every thing said about A&L and Santander is negative :(

The down side is A&L offshore seem to be paying one of the best interest rates at the moment :(

Havnt heard anything, also nothing about this in message system on online banking, I would be suspicious.

I received a similar request and supplied information requested. You cannot go through life being cynical of everything.

AIB offer the best rates at the moment depending on what you want.

Also there's some Building Societies in Gibralta that might be worth checking out, Northern Rock and Leeds Permanent are 2.

I think you will find that Northern Rock Offshore ceased to exist last year, and that Leeds Gibraltar only accept deposits from residents of Spain or Gibraltar.
