Just musing on this Chaucer quote and thinking on its parallels to Thailand today. Move forward a few hundred years and substitute "priest" for political leader(s).

Something is worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it.

That is why the pretty gals get more offers than the plain ones. But, if you want to keep one around long time then you are better off with the plain Janes.

Who used to work in the circus.

I used to work in a circus one summer while I was going to university. It was an "interesting" experience to say the least. I was the phototographer, but helped out in other aspects. Some of the things that were shown would not be politically correct by today's standards and would be illegal.
