More cracks developed yesterday in the temporary floodwalls along Prapa Canal, flooding many Bangkok and Nonthaburi communities along the waterway that feeds raw water to the city's waterworks.

Meanwhile, the Royal Irrigation Department said work on a damaged embankment at the mouth of the canal in Chiang Rak in Pathum Thani had been completed.

Housing estates near the canal, such as Passorn and Chuen Kamol Niwet, were flooded, as water levels were greater than capacity.

Leaks were also spotted from the canal's concrete walls along Pracha Chuen Road, in the area between Dhurakij Pundit University and the Pong Phet intersection.

As the flood water continues to ravage the waterworks canal, affecting Bangkok's Don Muang district, parts of Samsen Road from the Kiak Kai intersection was closed yesterday evening to drain water out.

The Khiew Khai Ka Community near Rajinibon School, one of Bangkok's 27 communities outside the permanent floodwall, was submerged yesterday after a two-metre section of the barrier near the school was breached at around 4.30pm.

Flood water from the Chao Phraya poured into the area, forcing Samsen Rd to be closed.

The authorities also evacuated Khiew Khai Ka community residents to safer places.

Bangkok Governor MR Sukhumbhand Paribatra yesterday inspected the Tha Prachan-Wang Lang area at 4pm after a report the Chao Phraya had suddenly risen to about 2.3-2.4 metres and some flood water had seeped through barriers.

The governor also visited the Siriraj Hospital Pier and found it to be safe. He ordered the height of the pier's floodwall to be increased from the current 2.8 metres to 3 metres. He also urged residents outside the city's permanent floodwall, who have been affected by flooding, to evacuate to temporary shelters that the city had set up in various districts.
