Though I have a car, I prefer to hop on the sawngthaew (baht bus) when going around in downtown Pattaya. There is a particular group of tourists (Russians) that do not realize that 1) you scoot over to make room for new passengers-not to spread out 2) you don't flag down a baht bus and start negotiating a price when the baht bus is already occupied 3) speaking politely to the drivers is helpful Next, this particular group generally does not step aside when other people are walking towards them... It is an economic blessing for Pattaya to see such of flood of new tourists when the numbers of Westerners are on the decline, but it is a disappointment to see some of them so clueless.

You have to cut them some slack...bring trapped behind the Iron Curtain for all those years made then a rather surly and unfriendly lot.

You don't have to be Russian to be clueless...any baht bus virgin can inadvertently commit one or two of these etiquette breaches. Why, even a seasoned non-virgin can be clueless after being intoxicated with alcohol or the big-man syndrome. Did I tell you about the non-Russian idiot with big-man syndrome who decided to impress his lady by smoking a cigar in a full baht bus?

Twice yesterday in Bangkok while entering MBK shopping centre the door was left to swing in my face... (no attempt was made to hold the door open for my wife and I)...

The culprit - Self centered aging american ladies.

How do I know they were self centered. After letting the door swing back into my wife and I, they stopped at security check point (metal detector) to ask the guard for directions, thus blocking our passage through the metal detector.

These two ladies were totally unaware of anyone else around them.

Lets face it. There are ignorant and self centered twots exist in any country....

These two ladies probably thought I was an impatient ass when in an irritated tone I said... "Excuse me !"

These issues on the Baht bus are surely to be expected in a city such as Pattaya.

How did you know they were "American ladies"? Did you ask to see their passports? --- Could be Canadians, British, Australians... B)

A US accent is quite easy to differentiate from Canadian or any other accent. No need for a passport check, they were broadcasting their nationality with the volume of their speech.

Horse manure. Americans living near the Canadian border often have the same accent and lots of other Americans do too. I'm American and have spent lots of time in Canada and have to wait for them to say "eeh" a few times or "out and aboot" to know for sure.

.... being a little pernickety aren't we?

As most people who live in the US do so not on the border with Canada it is fair to suggest that in general a US accent is quite easy to differentiate from a Canadian accent. But for the pedantic perhaps I should have written; The accent with which the ladies in question spoke with was unquestionably a US accent and quite easy to differentiate from a Canadian or any other accent from an English speaking nation.

The point was ignorance in the manner of poor etiquette is present in people of most nationalities even one's we would generally consider educated and well mannered.

No. Your statement that "A U.S. accent is quite easy to differentiate from Canadian" is very often not correct and plenty of Canadians speak loudly. There are a few U.S. accents that are quite different, but few Canadian accents are much different from most American accents.

UG is right. Most Canadians can easily be mistaken for Americans. Reminds me of when I first learned what a loonie was in Canada (when a clerk too me for a Canadian). It goes both ways.

were I tend to agree that some russians are not well equiped with manners and politeness it is certaintly not an exclusive club just for them.

Wish I had a baht for every time I've had to say "Excuse me" to or go around some idiot of any nationality blocking the way. If they're sufficiently egregious I yell, "Move OUT OF THE WAY!" or "Move it, Fred!" One rudeness deserves another, unless it's going to lead to a police report . . . . :) That's because politeness is lost on these buffaloes.

It probably just sounds normal to you if you've been living there 62 years. :D

You can level a charge of ignorance at any race but the Eastern bloc had this reputation well before they ever found Pattaya. That they act the same in Pattaya is hardly surprising. Just go ask those in European holiday destinations for their opinions and you will hear a strangely familiar tune.

What is unforgivable is trying to hire a bus when people are already on it. That cannot happen in any country and is not just down to ignorance. If the Japanese tried it (which they never would by the way), their actions would be met with screams of horror as they sought top force their perceived superiority on non Japanese (an overplayed tune as well) but we somehow excuse the Eastern bloc when they do the very same thing.

That they can be identified by their region is not racist, just the truth.

I have indeed noticed a definite tendency for both Russian and Indian nationalities to attempt to private charter baht buses that are already occupied with bus riders. Yes, I think that is rude.

Accent and behavior, both help in differentiating between Americans and Canadians.

Canadians are generally softer, quieter and more British in their manners.

They are also less likely to shoot you in a dispute (whether personal or international)

Russian and American manners are far closer IMHO, in both volume and selfishness.

Since we are talking about Etiquette here

Why is it that people who insist on wearing back packs don't have any situational awareness that the dam_n hump on their back is invading my space

Got on the elevator the other day and some idiot who was wearing one because he had his golf clubs in his hand bumped into three people already on the elevator and not a word of apology
