Thailand will borrow foreign expertise to generate wealth, as locally grown knowledge is limited and cannot keep pace with global change, Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra said yesterday. International experts, especially those who specialise in mega-infrastructure projects, would be hired to accelerate national progress, Mr Thaksin told a meeting of middle management organised by the Bureaucracy Development Commission.

``The question is how we can cultivate global knowledge and use it to speed up the country's development. If we drift away in our thoughts, we won't catch up with the rest of the world,'' he said.

Many state mega-projects were being held back despite abundant liquidity and credit. The hinderance was the limitations of locally cultivated knowledge.

The recruitment of foreign experts and investors would bring in both money and knowhow. The United States was an example of how the ``cream'' from various nationalities could help a country prosper. Thailand could be a similar melting pot.

I was going to write a really long sarcastic post about this but then I realised...its just not worthy of the effort, is it? Same shit, different day.

Been a while since I've seen the word 'progress' used in that way though. Not since the 1970s actually. And I would have thought that Singapore would have been a more locally relevant 'melting pot model of success' than the US.

Big difference in the melting pots. In the US immigrants would migrate bringing their expertise, but stay and take their ideas and skill to fruition. To be able to purchase land, homes and businesses, to put down their roots, to grow their lives and families. To gain citizenship without much ado.

In Thailand with its xenophobia, the PM seems to be saying, we want to take what you have in knowledge and skill till you run out of usefulness and then say thank you very much, now get outta our country, Oh by the way heres a few durians and some baht. You can visit, but you just can't stay

1. There are many highly skilled foreigners allready living here who would like to contribute something to Thailand but are not permitted to.

2. Try showing a Thai an easier or better way of doing something. They just laugh at you and do it their own way. There are not many certainties here but one is, if their is a hard way of doing something , the Thais will find it.

Import slaves from the poor neighbours to do the heavy, dirty stuff for a plate of rice and exploited western trained experts to do the brainwork for a shipload of grain. What a sad bloody indictment of the Thai education and vocational systems eh!

I suppose a lot of the oil rich states of the Middle East were able to exploit western expertise to develop their infrastructures but they had the cash. So has the PM and the mega rich Thai elite I suppose but they won't be parting with their booty, that's for sure and certain.

But the government already offers the traditional colonial prerogatives to educated foreigners, especially in the technology areas: they live a much higher standard of living than back home (with maids, cooks, and drivers), they can have cheap drinks, cheap entertainment, and cheap women. If they are married their wives become modern day memsahibs whose faces grace the social pages of the regional ex-pat newspapers. They have the options of first rate English language private schools for their kids. They often get paid more than their Thai coounterpart buy I just can't figure out how to add in farm commodities to the mix. Free tapioca anyone?
