A swarm of what I thought was bees, but now think are hornets, arrived yesterday and took up residence in an old speaker cabinet in the roof of the carport.

Any helpful suggestions as to how to remove them without getting stung badly?

Thank you.

Play them some grunge music. Or on a more serious note and if you live amongst Thais, let them do it. I think you will find that they are more adapt at it?

Most all the grocery stores have cans of insecticide with 6" needle nozzles. If I had hornets in my speaker box, I'd wait until evening, go out with a flashlight, insert the nozzle into the opening that the bees are using, and let 'er rip. I've done such a thing (not with speaker boxes) with hornets, wasps, bumble bees........nighttime seems to be a safe time. Wear pants and a long sleeve shirt, cover your face/neck if you're worried.

I would have thought the obvious answer would be to ask your landlord to get it removed. Failing that pay some professional pest controllers to do it. Best not go poking around yourself when you clearly don't know what your doing.

Some Asian hornets can be deadly when the hive is provoked. I would suggest you get a local, they will gladly get rid of them for you in exchange for getting to keep the larvae. If not the fee won't be much.

Don't use this method you could cause an out of control fire.

Do you want the loudspeaker box? The usual way is to soak the box in petrol and to set it alight :o

That's what I ended up doing. I first blocked off the entrance to the speaker box, at night when they're sleeping, and then poked the long nozzle in and sprayed. Must have worked as haven't heard anything from the box since.

However, I had missed a small hole, and lots came out, so I retreated to the house while they buzzed around the ouside light. I then blasted a lot of spray at them, which dispatched them to the ground.

Thanks for the replies, though I wouldn't use the petrol fire method, as that would have burnt the roof as well.

Mosquito coil first.... let it burn through half of it. Then Sheltox (the orange capped 'needle nozzle' brand mentioned earlier), then back away for a bit. They do die from it, BUT not instantly. Many will survive for a bit, flying around. Repeat if necessary.

Thanks. I'll try that if there is a next time.
