BANGKOK, Nov 25 - Thailand on Friday approved a budget of Bt635 million (US$21 million) to upgrade education in the violence-impacted southern border region, according to Deputy Prime Minister/Interior Minister Yongyuth Wichaidit.

Speaking to reporters after chairing a meeting of the Southern Border Provinces Development Strategy Committee, Mr Yongyuth said 14 projects were endorsed, including establishment of a knowledge park in Pattani and Narathiwat provinces, a protection plan for teachers and education personnel through public participation, an ASEAN language school for the southern border region and a scholarship programme for education opportunities of students.

Mr Yongyuth said that the education achievement of students in the region has been lower than half the national education standard. In addition, there is a shortage of skilled workers, in particular for vocational training. He assigned the Budget Bureau to determine the funds needed to tackle the problem.

The troubled region has experienced growing violence for almost eight years. Insurgents carried out shootings and bombings against civilians, government officials and security personnel.

Teachers and education personnel have also been frequently targeted, with more than 100 being killed in the ongoing violence. (MCOT online news)
