This has to be an incredible feat of engineering. fully working V12 engine made from scratch.....each piston is 11mm dia.

Life is an adventure, not a quest for security! Its ok to make mistakes.

Fantastic piece of work despite it not being a fully working internal combustion engine.

Although rather bigger this is a real engine http://www.enginehistory.org/ModelEngines/merlin_xx.shtml it's not the first working model Merlin, there was one featured in The Model Engineer in the early '70s.

The rest of the site has some beautiful model engines, http://www.enginehistory.org/model_engines.shtml some people have far more patience (and far better eyes) than myself.

That's a definite work of art. I wouldn't have anyways near the patience to make the drawings much less build all the parts.

Did you know that the max RPM of a Merlin was 2500  unless needed to get out of a situation. :)

Indeed, but if it revved higher it wouldn't make such a wonderful sound. Six of them together is just something else, if you've not seen (and heard) the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (Lancaster, Spitfire and Hurricane) in flight you don't know what you're missing :P

Why is it not a fully working internal combustion engine?

It's powered by compressed air, in effect a V12 steam engine.

My mate used to work on the BBMF quite a few years ago and even then they were going around RAF station gate guards cannibalising them for parts.
