Diabetic Doctor / Clinic

Does anybody know if of a good doctor or clinic that specializes in Diabetics? It is possible the hospitals all have somebody or a department but I just don't know as I am guessing it Type II diabetes is not that common among Thais. I'm just looking for somebody to work with knowledgeable people in terms of management and right medications.

Type 2 is very common amongst Thai's from what I've heard.

You can make an appointment to see an endocrinologist at Samitivej Soi 49 hospital, I think it costs about 800-1000 Baht for an initial consultation. They will most likely order a bunch of tests including the HBA1C which will be charged for separately. Then you will need to return once the results are in.

Thanks! I assumed it wasn't that common given there is not a huge weight problem with folks here like in the west but interestingly enough I never was very overweight and developed it. There are lots of factors to consider but just seems Thais get more exercise (walking) and eat less than those in the west and wanted to be sure I work with people who really know about the disease ... especially managing Type II.

Any "guess" what tests run? Just curious if they are radically cheap like everything else medical here compared to the US.

They will run almost any test you require. I was told if I want to become a regular 'patient' at the hospital and use them to monitor my health on an ongoing basis I will need either to have my medical records sent over to Thailand or have a bunch of blood tests done - LFT, Kidney Function, Lipids, etc.

Compared to the US it will be very cheap. The following costs are from mid 2010.

I paid about 3300 Baht for three blood tests and a consultation with Doctor Kansuda Thongthai who's one of their Consultant Endocrinologists, she trained in Canada and speaks perfect English. It's worth mentioning at this stage that a Consultant Endocrinologist is the specialist who deals with Diabetes and related disorders in hospitals. Their knowledge of the subject is infinitely better than a regular Doctor who hasn't specialised.

The results of the tests were emailed to me. I had a HBA1C, Thyroid function test and a test to see if I'm deficient in a specific vitamin, B12.

They don't/didn't offer the GAD-65 test (look it up) in Thailand according to what I was told.

The hospital itself was more like a hotel lobby, a huge place with zero overcrowding and little waiting. I booked my initial appointment over the internet using their website. You can choose your Doctor from the various drop down lists of Departments and Doctors that are available. If you search this thaivisa website you will see at least one other post by someone else mentioning this specific Doctor in a very positive light.
