Telecom Panel: 3G Auction to Be Carried out in 2012

The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission expects to launch the 3G license auction by next year.

National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission, or NBTC, Chairman Air Chief Marshal Tharet Punsri reported that officials are working on a master plan concerning the management of the bandwidth, as well as a telecommunications master plan, and a broadcasting and television master plan.

The bandwidth management master plan will pave the way for the auction of the 3G mobile phone licenses.

Once approved, the plans will have to undergo a public hearing.

The whole process is expected to take three months.

The NBTC chief said he has asked Total Access Communication, or DTAC, to send a report on the systems failure that occurred on December 21 in by today with additional information due in 15 days.

It also held an NBTC Public Forum on the public’s expectations from the organization with various sectors in attendance.

The NBTC hopes to hold such a forum at least once a month.

NBTC member Colonel Settapong Malisuwan said he expects the three master plans to be launched by March so that within the third quarter of the year, the NBTC should be able to hold its 3G license auction on the 2.1 gigahertz bandwidth.
