What Coffee Do You Use?

Over the break I visit my friends 70 rai block of land in BangLan Village 37 km out of MaeMalai on the road to Pai. He has imported newly developed Arabic as his main coffee plants. The Thai Arabic is all stemming from the same original route stock, so is lacking some variety. He is now harvesting and processing the coffee in-house under the brand name Hi Coffee. Udom does all the processing inhouse for drying, dehusking and curing of the coffee with extreme care taken to keep temperatures within what we would consider a western set of specifications. The coffee beans are light brown as apposed to the dark burnt coffee beans you get in the wider available commercial packs. As a result to coffee has an astounding natural creamyness to it, and the aroma is something to die for.. His production is limited, but is growing from season to season.. pardon the pun..

You can see his website here (I'm not sure of the forum rules but here is the site)

Thank God I drink instant coffee the brand sold eveywhere. My friend Carlos Slim turned be on to this coffee 40 years ago.

I would advise all to drink instant coffee.

I’m wondering what others out there who make their own coffee are using. Not talking about 'instant.'

My favorite was Thung Who. This was available at Foodland, and the Friendship Market in Pattaya (where they sold in bulk). I’m no where near Bangkok or Pattaya these days so haven’t checked in a while, but last I saw Foodland seemed to stop re-stocking it and Friendship stopped altogether.

Then I started to use Duan Dee (sp?), it was ok, available at all Tops markets, but not anymore.

Now I’m down to Maccona Espresso. Everything else, when available at all, like Suzuki, will be about double in price, at least.

We have Khao Shong at home, plus we also have some raw beans from my step son's farm that we roast and grind from time to time.

I swear by my Nespresso machine... Indra, Ristretto and Roma are my favorites. I'm certainly no connoisseur but have to say that Nespresso makes some of the best coffee I've tasted.

I'd love to be able to buy and roast my own beans but don't have the time or persuasion at present.

I have a Nespresso machine too and love the "Cosy" capsules.

The problem is logistics here in Thailand. I have never seen Nespresso capsules here. Have you?

Besides this, I also use a "normal" coffee machine and there I prefer the Segafreddo Italian beans in the red bag. Great taste but quite expensive.

You can't buy the capsules in Thailand, but you can get them in Singapore and Hong Kong. The other option is ordering from the website, but apparently the customs duty could be quite high.

I bring mine in from Aus whenever I go there. I've got a pretty good supply now.

Tops Pattaya, Central basement, Foodland all carry Duang Dee. They have a website.

Casino Coffee has replaced Carrefour product at BgCX. Columbian and Brazil 100% arabica. Expresso also.

Yes, just saw Casino coffee for the first time in our BigC Extra. But no decaf! I like to do 50/50. Get too jittery otherwise.

Yes, you are correct. No decaf yet. I'm hoping it will be in the next shipment. Buying decaf anywhere else is usually twice as expensive as regular ground coffee.

Is decaf from Casino cheaper than elsewhere? Anyone know if they have decaf at this time? I love the taste of coffee, but due to hypertension have to limit myself to one cup per day.

Macona Blue Mountain for me, for probably 20 years, buy it in a blue box, already ground, usually around 85 to 100Baht a 250 for gram pack. Tried others, I always go back to the Maconoa Blue.

I spent a few days at a friend house. He drinks a local coffee, Mocca or Mocco something, in a red packet. Not bad at all. An acceptable alternative to Lavazza

PS : I just see the post above. I thought it was this coffee from the name but after checking on the net, it's a different one.

Onto my last 500g packet of Jacobs Kronung ground which I discovered on an offshore trip. Bought my lot on amazon in the US and had it hand carried in. Just checked again and they also do the bean so I may get that next time and play with my own grind. I found 250g packages of their ground on amazon in the UK but the reviewer said that it was made in Poland and was totally different from the German-made version. Jacobs is owned by Kraft.

Jingthing turned me on to Peets coffees a few years back via this forum. Their Major Dickasons is indeed splendid but I haven't restocked from the US for a while. I also tried an East African, Indonesian and Brasilian from their range and I listed them in order of my taste. Other traveling top-ups include Douwe & Egberts Gold in 500g packages at Schiphol on the fly-by.

Point of note; when visiting an offshore installation or ship, I find if the crew is mostly British, then the coffee is invariably instant. Americans tend to favout those horrible drip-brews that then sit on a hob for half a day getting bitter and undrinkable. The mixed European crews tend to splash out on machines or cafetieres and have some wider coffee choices.

I use to get one of those vacuumed packed "bricks" for about 120B or so at Carrefour. They have them still, but only for regular. I've looked all over. Best I've found so far is Friendship. I think it was around 300B or so. I just can't take regular coffee, but LOVE a cup in the morning.

Oh, vacuumpacks means "real" coffee right? I've used instant for so long I forgot there was anything else. What I probably meant to ask was if there is any place to buy instant decaf in Pattaya that doens't cost 4x normal "better quality" (Douwe Egbert) regular instant coffee.

For my "normal" espresso machine, which needs beans, I use "Segafredo" beans, which I also used back in Europe. They come from Bologna, near my spiritual home Modena. It's the most popular coffee in Modena and I am so happy to get it here.

The machine is from Gaggia. Of course, it 100% Arabica.

I agree. Best value for money. If not available, Boncafe Morning Coffee 120 Bt.

I have seen then at Central Chit Lom (*Mid 2011 - THB 380 to 420 if memory serves me correctly).

I bring in my own from overseas travel. Last trip to singapore I brough 30 cartons back !

What limited edition coffees are there ? I just purhcased 5 cartons of a Costa Rican special edition.

I buy Boncafe espresso beans , they have the best beans produced in Thailand. 140 baht .

I also am a happy owner of an Italian espresso machine , it cost me a fortune but nothing can beat the taste.

I favoured Hillkoff (hill tribe aribica) but the price was too steep, then switched to Duang Dee, recently their price jumped conciderably..... I like Dewey Egberts special (owned by sara lee corp.) not too expensive and good taste. Maccona is from Dewey Egberts but over priced in my opinion. Still buy Duang Dee and blend with D.E. special.

coffee1.gif People taste foods differently and many people, men and women alike, simply don't taste much of anything. For the latter food and drinks are fuel rather than high pleasure. There are people who should only drink plonk because exquisite wines would be a waste of money for them. Yes, I do have a problem with suggesting that men who prefer better coffees are necessarily effete. You will find in the real world many ladyboys drinking instant coffee. There goes your brilliant theory, mate.coffee1.gif Edited by Jingthing
