What Coffee Do You Use?

I’m wondering what others out there who make their own coffee are using. Not talking about 'instant.'

My favorite was Thung Who. This was available at Foodland, and the Friendship Market in Pattaya (where they sold in bulk). I’m no where near Bangkok or Pattaya these days so haven’t checked in a while, but last I saw Foodland seemed to stop re-stocking it and Friendship stopped altogether.

Then I started to use Duan Dee (sp?), it was ok, available at all Tops markets, but not anymore.

Now I’m down to Maccona Espresso. Everything else, when available at all, like Suzuki, will be about double in price, at least.

I favoured Hillkoff (hill tribe aribica) but the price was too steep, then switched to Duang Dee, recently their price jumped conciderably..... I like Dewey Egberts special (owned by sara lee corp.) not too expensive and good taste. Maccona is from Dewey Egberts but over priced in my opinion. Still buy Duang Dee and blend with D.E. special.

Our deep freeze is half full of coffee.

When I heard that Carrefour was being bought out by BigC I bought in 48 packs of Carrefour's Columbian. My weekday breakfast favourite. Brewed up in an old mocha pot, the perfect start for a working day.

For Weekend mornings and special occasions I have a stock of my all time favourite coffee Sant'Eustachio which I ship in twice a tear from Rome. This I save for Espresso brewed up in a hand pumped Pavoni .

For local brews, I don't buy in local coffee but my favourites are Amazon Espresso and the Macchiato they brew up at our loal Doi Chaang Cafe

What? No Nescafe fans????

Ok sorry, was being a troll. Ghastly poison isn't it? Yet The Big C stocks more Nescafe products than anything else. How I miss Carrefour. First my smoked salmon vanished, then the decent coffee started to disappear. I like my coffee black and strong

I enjoy Red Cliff coffee brand, a small producer in Chiang Rai who sells through a few outlets in Chiang Mai like Rimping and Kasem. Red Cliff has three or four blends, and will deliver locally to customers in the CM area free of charge. THe coffee is roasted correctly, nice and slow at a low heat and one does not taste a bitter burnt aftertaste of the beans. In my opinion it is the closest coffee to my favourite Costa Rican blend called Cafe Britt.

Lavazza. Red one for morning, black one for expresso. Every time I've a friend coming from Europe I ask him to bring as many packet as he can so basically I never bought any coffee in Asia.

For breakfast I usually use a standard coffee machine. For lunch, either the expresso machine or my italian coffee machine

I tried one time Starbuck, a packet was offered to me by a friend. I think the packet is still in the fridge after almost one year. If no other choice, I rather drink tea.

Thanks for all the responses. Not a one mentioned OTOP coffee. If they didn’t use the deplorable Latin American practice of roasting the beans with sugar they might have a chance.

But where are you guys getting the stuff? I haven’t seen Duang Dee since Tops stopped carrying it. There was supposedly a Thung Who store in the Silom area, I went looking for it a few years ago but no trace, locals I asked never heard of it; I think the building it was in was torn down.

Yeah, Illy is great stuff but the price is ridiculous, even more than Lavazza.

The only place I’ve seen Dewey Egberts was in Foodland, save for one time I came across it in a small supermarket in Krabi.

Myself, I use a Melitta plastic ‘funnel’ with paper filters. Coffee is my luxury item.

Tops Pattaya, Central basement, Foodland all carry Duang Dee. They have a website.

Casino Coffee has replaced Carrefour product at BgCX. Columbian and Brazil 100% arabica. Expresso also.

Yes, just saw Casino coffee for the first time in our BigC Extra. But no decaf! I like to do 50/50. Get too jittery otherwise.

Yes, you are correct. No decaf yet. I'm hoping it will be in the next shipment. Buying decaf anywhere else is usually twice as expensive as regular ground coffee.

As for whole bean, my current stockpile includes.....

Columbian

Guatamalan

Costa Rican

Lao

Vietnamese

Thai (Duang Dee)

Moccha (Central American/Ethiopian)

And

Sumatran ground.

Brazilian ground (Casino)..mild but tasty

My 4 year supply of red Lavazza that I brought with me from Europe in 2007 has finally run out.sad.png

But I love Duang Dee hill-tribe coffee, and I drink a lot of it.

I swear by my Nespresso machine... Indra, Ristretto and Roma are my favorites. I'm certainly no connoisseur but have to say that Nespresso makes some of the best coffee I've tasted.

I'd love to be able to buy and roast my own beans but don't have the time or persuasion at present.

100% agreed. I like having the choice of all the flavours. Some of the limited editions are interesting too.

Biggest pain is that you can't get the capsules in Thailand, but that just means bringing in (or getting someone else to bring in) a good supply from Aus. Just came back yesterday with about 40 packs.

I picked up several interesting brands at the Coffee Fair in Pattaya last May, my favourite being from Vittorio.Hopefully there will be another fair this year.

Currently using Sala daeng beans from Chiang Rai in the De Longhi Cafe Treviso machine I brought over from home.

Over the break I visit my friends 70 rai block of land in BangLan Village 37 km out of MaeMalai on the road to Pai. He has imported newly developed Arabic as his main coffee plants. The Thai Arabic is all stemming from the same original route stock, so is lacking some variety. He is now harvesting and processing the coffee in-house under the brand name Hi Coffee. Udom does all the processing inhouse for drying, dehusking and curing of the coffee with extreme care taken to keep temperatures within what we would consider a western set of specifications. The coffee beans are light brown as apposed to the dark burnt coffee beans you get in the wider available commercial packs. As a result to coffee has an astounding natural creamyness to it, and the aroma is something to die for.. His production is limited, but is growing from season to season.. pardon the pun..

You can see his website here (I'm not sure of the forum rules but here is the site)
