The Education Ministry will host an event in memory of Kru Juling, a teacher who was held hostage and killed in Narathiwat province five years ago.

The memorial will be held on January 8, the day Juling Pangamoon succumbed to her injuries after the assault put her in a coma for almost eight months. She was 24 years old.

The memorial will include a charity run and walk, kicking off at the ministry and going through Rajdamnoen Nok, Rachadamnoen Klang, Democracy Monument, Dinsor, Prachathippatai, Nakhon Ratchasima roads and then back to the ministry.

Donations from the event will be used partially to cover the renovation of an arts centre that bears her name in Chiang Rai, where Juling hailed from. The centre, which is run by her father Soon, exhibits her work and showcases her dedication to education. An earthquake damaged the centre earlier this year.

The rest of the donations will be used to construct a statue of Kru Juling.

Before she began teaching, Juling and three friends spent two years drawing and painting at temples and schools in the South. She also published a book of the sketches and dedicated it to HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn. The late elementary school teacher leaves behind her intended masterpiece - a painting of the school she loved.
