Train, Bus Terminals Crowded with New Year Travelers

The Hua Lumphong Railway Station and the Mo Chit Bus Terminal are becoming increasingly crowded as passengers travel to other provinces during the New Year.

Additional train services have been prepared to accommodate more passengers traveling back home for the New Year's celebrations.

The atmosphere at the Hua Lumphong Railway Station and the Mo Chit Bus Terminal has been lively this morning, as people begin their trips back home to celebrate the New Year.

Meanwhile, the Transport Company has prepared more buses to accommodate those traveling back to their home provinces.

More than 30,000 trips will accommodate nearly 750,000 passengers.

The Public Transport Security Center has also been set up to receive complaints regarding overpriced tickets and the manners of bus drivers.

More than 200 officials from the Traffic Police, the Bang Sue Police Station, and Crowd Control Division have been dispatched to monitor road safety.

Meanwhile, the State Railway of Thailand has prepared 10 additional trains for the New Year, between December 30, 2011 and January 4, 2012, for both in- and outbound routes, including routes between Bangkok and Ubon Ratchathani Province and Bangkok and Si Sa Ket Province.

All tickets have been booked in advance. Police officers are monitoring the stations around the clock to strictly implement security measures.

Air Travel Surges during New Year Holiday

The director of Suvarnabhumi International Airport expects more than 2.1 million passengers to travel through the airport during the New Year holiday, an increase of 26.87 percent.

Director of Suvarnabhumi Airport Somchai Sawatdeephol has reported that during the Christmas and New Year holidays, from December 25 to January 5, it is expected that a total of 2.1 million passengers, or a daily average of 170,000, will travel through the airport, an increase of 26.87 percent form the same period last year.

Somchai has indicated that the airport has prepared staff members to oversee security and direct traffic at the terminals and parking facilities.

Additional staff has also been called in to ensure efficiency in baggage handling, elevator, escalator and air bridge systems.

Furthermore, the airport has also set up a center behind the Row R check-in counter to coordinate security operations from December 29 to January 4.

Boonsri Sophonpanich passes away

Boonsri Sophonpanich, wife of Bangkok Bank's founder and former chairman Chin, passed away today at the age of 94.

The bank announced that the bathing rite will take place on Monday Jan 2 at Wat Debsirin, to be followed by the religious ceremony until Jan 8. All guests are asked not to bring along wreathes.

Chin and Boonsri had seven children, including Chote Sophonpanich and Khunying Chodchoi Sophonpanich.
