They will raid a couple of vendors, parade them before the cameras, fine them 500 baht and it will all be back to normal next week.

Am I getting too cynical ?

What about the little wooden guy who lives in a barrel and has his arms and dick controlled by springs?

How many wandering bar sellers will now need to change merchandise?

If they can't sell watches, I guess that means we will now have hundreds more selling lottery tickets.

Lewd: : sexually unchaste or licentious b : OBSCENE, VULGAR

Whats that got to do with pirated movies and cds?

SBK: Pol Col Somnuk said that the government has targeted the elimination of lewd materials along with materials breaching intellectual property laws. This is another way of saying pirated / illegal copies.

That means no more copy watches, t-shirts, CDs, DVDs etc.

IMO this could go 2 ways:

1. A permanent cleanup of pirated stuff (similar to Singapore) which would take a lot of fun out of Thailand, but perhaps create some jobs building cheap non-copy watches, T-shirts etc.

2. A media PR exercise to show that the Police are actually stopping people breaking the law by selling pirated stock causing the owners of the copyright to lose royalties.

I am opting for number 2. As a side note, this reminds me of my first trip to Phuket 3 years ago. On the first night I visited Patong and expected t find another Pattaya ... but the girls were wearing long dresses and the boys were in jeans and t-shirts.

Seeing I was a newbie with a disappointed look on my face, a friendly Thai came up to me and introduced himself as a bar owner and said: 'No sexy show tonight, police come.'

Sure enough, within 5 minutes a parade of uniformed police, men in suits (pointed out to me as local politicians) and media people arrived and were shown a very respectable Patong.

My new Thai friend said to me when the parade had passed us by ... 'come back tomorrow night Sir, all back to normal.' Sure enough, the following night all the bar staff were wearing (heck ... you know the rest).

If all the pirated CDs and DVDs, copy watches and the like is removed, Beach Road will be a ghost town.

Nazi helmets: intellectual property on Nazi helmets? Who is owner of this intellectual property, the Fuehrer is dead. Is it Angela the new germans premier or does it belong to Austria as Dolferl (the local Austrian Nickname for him) was Austrian??

I think no problem with intellectual property at all and most of the Thais don't know much about it....
