Severe Drought Plagues Several Provinces

People in several provinces are now suffering from an early onset of the drought season.

Drought has arrived early and in Uthai Thani Province, where local residents are now running short of water for consumption.

The situation has forced local authorities to discharge 60 million cubic meters of water from Tab Sa Lao Dam for 400,000 rais of rice fields in five districts.

As of now, the volume of water stored in the dam remains at only 30 percent of its capacity.

In contrast, the water level of the Ping River running through Kamphaeng Phet was full when the Bhumibol Dam released a large amount of water to alleviate the drought situation.

Operators of the Bhumibol Dam made adjustments to the water management after the flood crisis in the central region ended.

Recently, the volume of water in the dam stood at 12.3 billion cubic meters, or the equivalent of 91 percent of its capacity.

Farmers along the Ping River installed water pumps to store water for planting during the fast-approaching drought.

They said their yields are expected to be higher than last year's, as they have a large volume of water.

Meanwhile, the Pak Kwae Subdistrict Administration Organization in Sukhothai Province brought in heavy machinery to construct a makeshift dam to store water from the Yom River for rice and corn farms, tobacco plantations, chili, pumpkin, and marigold orchards during the drought season.

In addition, seven districts of Chantaburi Province have been declared drought disaster zones.

In response, officials prepared 20 water pumps and 40 trucks to deal with the problem.

As for Nong Khai Province, the Khong River has receded drastically to 1.9 meters.

The provincial Hydrology and Water Management Center announced that the water level will be stable for a while before it begins to drop continuously until May.

Perhaps when they learn not to grow crops during the dry season, then there will be no 'drought' and there will be no more massive flooding, because water was stored exactly for this reason - and last year far too much was stored; in some months last year NO water was released from some of these dams.

I usually refrain from comments on this sort of thing because I don't like talking bad about the country I live in, the wife's instructions.laugh.png

All the rainwater of 2011 was mis-managed not just 2011 also of all the years before that, it seems they only have an incompetent flood management if any at all and not any plans for storage of water, sad very sad indeed.

They have the money to build this and that but not enough money for any water saving control projects, sad again.

It doesn't really affect me but that doesn't stop me from thinking how can the Thai governments be so bloody stupid.

My family stays near the Bhumiphon Dam, one engineer included: the technical staff of the Dam has no influence, the technical useless stuff of the Gouvernment decides all.

Managing of rain water is an art, not a science. Rain is unpredictable, however we do know that at certain times during the year it will rain more or less.

This same story happens all over the world. One year we have "worst drought in 50 year history" and the next year there is flooding.

I would assume that the government has learned from the floods of 2011 and will try to modify their strategy, but there are still going to be floods and droughts. Man cannot control the rains*.

* at least not yet!

what you said is well known, but it's not a matter of controlling the rains is it, it's a matter that the person who was responsible in this government admitted his blunder in NOT releasing the water, before more water came, this knowledge was known, these things happen here more often when people hardly qualified attain high positions in government -including the very top. If you are lacking you need constant top Qualified persons appointed to advise, this is seemingly lacking somewhat at this time. Attention for 6 months as it's been posted a hundred times, has been more on red shirt matters, attempt to get K.Thaksin back, instead of concentrating on the heavy rainfall and the effect it will have on the country, amongst other things. In any business you have to be hands on-on the ball at all times, lose concentration and you make grave errors.

Closely followed by the Thaksin bashers wink.png

It rains too much ? Thaksin's fault !

It doesn't rain enough ? Thaksin's fault !

Now Thaksin has been elevated to the rank of "God controlling the weather" rolleyes.gif

What next ? Human sacrifice ?

I would suggest we start with Sondhi to get water to stop the drought, then Abhisit as soon as the flooding starts biggrin.png

Nothing wrong with Thai people, just the incompetents holding positions of authority.

Even Bob & Doug would understand that.cowboy.gif

Thai Bashers? Do you think Government and officials in Thailand are Competent? Can you be sure they will manage the Dam situation(aleady 70-90% full, more than this time last year)?

If you know anything about Thailand you will know that their inability to deal with crises is unsurpassable.

I honestly think you read too much The Nation. It's the Nation that put everyday Thaksin on the first page. And Thai Visa. Remove the threads that are not about bashing either the government or Thaksin, what's left ?

It's just selective reporting / editing ... and reading. Watch the television, read the local press, a lot of things is happening in Thailand. I think to be fair, the "Thailand News" section should be divided in two : "Thaksin/government bashing" and "Other local news" with no reference to Thaksin or the government allowed, that will be more fair for people who are interested in what's going on in the Kingdom and don't want to be constantly bothered by the yellow brigades.

You weren't happy that Thaksin hadn't been brought up yet, so you needed to do it yourself?

I would have expected this answer from you (defender of the faith) Disagree -it is Thaksin himself that is doing the promoting, I have been here 31 years and you think I just home in on the Nation I live in rural Thailand and see the red brigade first hand, People do not bash because it's Thaksin-family most object to the way things are declining, and decisions taken. I think the red and yellow shirt actions are complete Shizen.. whipped up by the money grabbing monsters, and gang leaders. So look at my caption, bash when needed---if not needed no bash--simple isn't it ???............now to bash you for being staunch pro Thaksin, and for bashing people who genuinely see wrong. If no one opposes the dictatorship gets stronger.

Very funny argument, coming from you. Nobody mentioned Thaksin, you bring him up. Nobody mentioned Abhisit, you bring him up, as you do in many other threads. You are really a shining example for keeping threads on topic, and your mostly condescending 'know it all' tone helps very much. Keep up the good work. thumbsup.gif
