Van der Sloot sentenced to 28 years in Peru murder case

2012-01-15 05:52:16 GMT+7 (ICT)

LIMA, PERU (BNO NEWS) -- Dutchman Joran Van der Sloot was sentenced to 28 years in prison on Friday for the murder of a young woman he met at a casino in Peru, prosecutors said. Van der Sloot is also a suspect in the disappearance of Natalee Holloway.

Van der Sloot, 24, appeared in court wearing a green T-shirt. During the lengthy reading of the verdict, taking more than two hours as an interpreter translated it to Dutch, he appeared to be nervous, confused, sweating and in disbelief as he wiped out some tears.

The Dutchman is also a suspect in the disappearance of American teenager Natalee Holloway, who went missing on May 30, 2005, during a high school graduation trip to Aruba. Despite international media attention, her body was never found and a court in Alabama ruled her legally dead on Thursday.

Exactly 5 years after Holloway's disappearance, on May 30, 2010, Van der Sloot took 21-year-old Peruvian woman Stephany Tatiana Flores to his hotel room in Lima after meeting her at a local casino. She was found dead there several days later after being strangled to death, and Van der Sloot was eventually arrested in Chile and deported to Peru to face trial.

The court in Peru sentenced Van der Sloot to 28 years in prison and ordered his deportation after he completes his prison time on June 10, 2038. He was also ordered to pay a 200,000 soles ($74,200) fine, which will be paid to Flores' family.

Van der Sloot earlier pled guilty to killing Flores after she apparently looked at his laptop and found out he was linked to the disappearance of Holloway. Although Van der Sloot said he was sorry for what happened, the three judges did not believe his apology was sincere.

Van der Sloot's lawyer, Jose Luis Jimenez, said they would appeal the sentence.

After Van der Sloot is released in 2038, he could face deportation to the United States where a warrant for his arrest was issued in 2010 after he allegedly tried to extort $250,000 from Natalee Holloway's mother in exchange for the location of her remains and the circumstances surrounding her death.

Dutchman wanted in Thailand gets 28 years in Peru Prison

Phuket Gazette / News Wires

PHUKET: Dutchman Joran Van der Sloot, wanted for questioning in Thailand for suspected sex trafficking, was sentenced to 28 years in a Peruvian prison on Friday for the murder of a young woman he met at a casino in Lima, prosecutors said.

Van der Sloot was also once sought by police in Aruba for the disappearance of American teenage tourist Natalee Holloway.

Van der Sloot, 24, during the lengthy reading of the verdict in Lima on Friday appeared to be nervous, confused, sweating and in disbelief as he wiped away tears.

Natalee Holloway went missing on May 30, 2005, during a high school graduation trip to Aruba. Despite international media attention, her body was never found and a court in the United States ruled her legally dead on Thursday.

Exactly 5 years after Holloway's disappearance, on May 30, 2010, Van der Sloot, after setting up shop in Bangkok for a few months, moved on to Peru where he took 21-year-old Peruvian woman Stephany Tatiana Flores to his Lima hotel room after meeting her at a local casino. She was found there several days later, strangled to death.

Van der Sloot was eventually arrested in Chile and deported back to Peru for trial.

The court in Peru sentenced him on Friday to 28 years in prison and ordered his deportation after completion of his prison time on June 10, 2038.

He was also ordered to pay a 200,000 soles ($74,200) fine, which will be paid to Flores' family.

During his stay in Bangkok in 2008, police, in addition suspecting Van Der Sloot of sex trafficking, also wanted to question him over the disappearance of several young Thai women.

There was no indication that he had operated in Phuket, or that any of the missing women had disappeared from Phuket.

28 years in a Peru prison. He'll only make 28 years if he strikes some AMAZING deals. Ah..justice!

I think he is eligible for parole in 14 years if he survives. Then he will be facing further charges in the USA. Such a promising young man from a high class family. That's over now.

What made him a "promising young man"? Being a piece of sh*t with a influential father to keep him out of trouble? The pos is wanted in two countries (USA & Thailand) in addition to Peru where he was caught after murdering (another?) young woman. I wonder what else there is that we don't know about this guy?

Why promising? Good looking, apparently popularity and charm skills, gambling skills, and yes mostly being born into class and privilege. Like it or not being male born into a powerful family makes you a promising young man most anywhere ... In this case, OK, could be a bad seed. Edited by Jingthing

Hopefully, though I doubt it, he will now provide details to the police over Natalee Holloway so that her family may get some 'closure' or at least lay their daughter to rest.

That is very doubtful. He is still liable to charges in the US. I don't see how revealing what is probably self incriminating info will be helpful to him.

He may prefer a us prison to a Peruvian one.

He must serve at least 14 years in Peru anyway. That is the earliest he will face US charges. He is Dutch and won't be transferred to the US related to his sentence in Peru. He is convicted of murder. The US charges are not murder charges. My amigos in Peruvian jail all tell me it's quite a rough ride (OK, I made that up but I did see Locked Up Abroad Peru). Having observed how Peru does not provide for their own military personal, I would not think prisoners will be much better treated than here in Thailand.

It's bad there. Unless he gets special treatment because of his celebrity (seems doubtful) I don't like his odds to survive it.

He murdered the daughter of a rich and influential Peruvian. The only special treatment he'll get will be the bloody and painful kind.

Fortunately for this murderer, he can confess to the Holloway murder and the USA will pull him right out of Peru on the next flight. After all, if the US can get Sweden to send us their slimy weirdo accused of rape as many believe, I'm sure they can persuade Peru to send us this guy.

No, that won't happen. I would bet the house on that. The USA is very happy where Master Sloot is rotting right now. It would also be very rude to Peru to even ask such an absurd thing. Not to mention any murder trial for M. Sloot would need to be in Aruba or mainland Netherlands.

Sorry, did I mention returning him to the USA to stand trial? I meant to say tie a pork chop in the shape of a cross around his neck and send him to Gitmo to play with the fellas down there.

One thing this guy has going for him, he'll tower over all those tiny Peruvians in jail. Of course, that won't help when they stick a shiv in him, but hey, that's life.

Van der Sloot is eligible for parole after 9 years. A Peru prisoner is eligible for parole after a third of their sentence.

Tie a pork chop round his neck? What is that all about? That remark says far more about you than it does about Mr Sloot. What a sad person you are.

Contrary to what most people believe, it seems his time in prison so far had been quite good:

Late Friday, prison authorities told the AP that Van der Sloot had been transferred to the high-security Piedras Gordas prison in northern Lima in response to reports that he had enjoyed privileges like television, internet access and a cell phone in Castro Castro prison. Piedras Gordas holds local crime bosses and terrorism convicts, including Shining Path guerrillas.

"He will be in an individual cell at Piedras Gordas to give authorities greater control of him and cut off some of the facilities he has had in Castro Castro," said prison service spokeswoman Janeth Sanchez.

Also, according to Dutch media which cites a Peruvian news program, Van der Sloot had a 42-inch LCD-tv and an iPhone which he used to access the internet. The news program managed to obtain his phone which showed he had been communicating with the outside world via e-mail and chats. The emails showed someone who paid his bail wanted the money back and he has a contract for an apartment somewhere in Lima. Phone also contained photos of him with his ex-girlfriends.

Previously, there were reports that Van der Sloot was making money inside the prison by dealing something and that he was able to receive 'female visitors', although the prison denied that at the time.

And your reply says a lot about you. Sloot killed at least one girl. I made a bad joke. I admit it - the pork chop around the neck is usually to get dogs to play with you, then the whole joke took diff course with the prison angle and trying to fit in America's most notorious prison and in the end it didn't really make sense. But to call someone a "sad person" because a joke falls flat? Sad indeed.

Yes but the victim's family has complained about this and I understand his situation is now going to change for the worse as he is now a convicted murderer.
