Sawasdee Khrup,

I've never visited Koh Samui, or anywhere in Thailand's south, but two friends of mine are contemplating a May visit.

From what I can see of the weather statistics, May can be quite wet, hot in Samui (as it can be in Chiang Mai, where I live, although here May is usually just intermittent showers, the warm-up for the major rainy season still to come).

Any thoughts about the pros and cons of visiting Samui in May ?

More or less farang tourists ? Lower season hotel/resort rates ?

Water conditions that may affect swimming, snorkeling ?

thanks, ~o:37;

may is one of the low seasons and shouldn't be wet at all unless you are in a bar. just hot, that's summer expect an afternoon storm and plenty of available rooms. water is calm but warm and swimming is great unless you are in shallow water. it's only separated from the high season by the calendar, enjoy.

May is a great time to visit. As Joe says, there are plenty of rooms around so it's worth just finding one when they get here unless it's a very late flight in.

May is an excellent month, to get an idea about the weather conditions maybe ask your friends to do the following; please have a look at my archives, half way down the page on my Samui info and weather blog, left hand side, they go back a few years. Open a month that you’re interested in and check one of the of the last posts of each month, starting with ‘Goodbye to…………’ this post will tell you the weather conditions for that month.

You can also check each individual post for that month if you wish to.

The blog may also give them some ideas of what to do and see around the island.
