I know: the ELP is almighty and the best in the world and...whatever!

In my neck of the woods, we have a pretty nice league, too.

Stadiums always packed, good atmosphere ...and usually a number of teams, battling it out for the championship (though Bayern usually makes it).

I would like to provide those of you who are interested with some facts such as results and news, as well as my view on things.

Everybody may join in the discussion!

Results of the 18. matchday

Bayer Leverkusen- Mainz 05 3:2 (2:0)

Europaleague- candidate Leverkusen against struggeling Mainz- seemed to be an easy affair on paper. The first half looked to fulfill the predictions, as LEV went ahead by 2:0 (Pospech 10. min, Friedrich 35 min). Mainz came back and showed a different face in half two. Within 3 minutes (Polanski 53 min, Calliguri 56 min) they equalized before Bender (70 min) punished Mainz weak defending after a corner - kick. Leverkusen are on their way into international football, while Mainz still struggle to avoid the drop.

Hamburg SV- Borussia Dortmund 1:5 (0:2)

New Hamburg- coach Fink spoke about "attacking" the Euro- League spots after the winter break- this (fairly optimistic) attempt was crushed by reigning champs Dortmund. Grosskreuz (16), Lewandowsky (37,83) and Kuba (58,76) practically destroyed a weak defense, before HSV could get one back (Guerrero, 86). Dortmund is now level on points with Bayern and Schalke in the No. 1 -spot. Hamburg is back where they started the season: uncomfortably close to the drop- zone.

FC Kaiserslautern- Werder Bremen 0:0

As the result doesn't sound overly exciting, the match was. Werder had to compensate for injuries and red cards: four potential 1st squad players were out, among them the creative midfielders like Hunt and Marin. Kaiserslauterns attacking- department being the weakest in the league, couldn't get passed a strong Werder- defense. The draw was ok for both teams, hitting post and crossbars several times. Bad news for Bremen: defender Proedl got a kick in the face and will be another addition to the list of injuries.

SC Freiburg- FC Augsburg 1:0 (0:0)

A much reshuffled Freiburg was the better of two, not really great teams in this "bottom of the table"- clash. Loosing Cisse to Newcastle in the winter- break and also dismissing 5 players, nothing much was expected quality wise, but at least the team was in control over a weak Augsburg- site. The only goal though was a "last minute"- produce (Ginter,88).

Hoffenheim- Hannover 96 0:0

Nothing much to say- in this case, the result says it all.

Schalke 04- VFB Stuttgart 3:1 (1:0)

Schalke quiet impressively made it clear that they are one of the main title contenders this year. Stuttgart didn't have much to show and are far from the form they showed earlier in the season. Matip (3), Pappadopolus (57) and youngster Draxler (80) scored a comfortable lead, before Okazaki (87) got one back for Stuttgart, who are getting uncomfortably close to the relegation- zone.

VFL Wolfsburg- 1 Fc Koeln 1:0 (0:0)

WOB- coach Maghat did a large shopping- tour in the winter break, presenting no less than 8 new players. 4 of them found themselves in the starting line up. Wolfsburg dominated the game, with Koeln struggeling to be constructive. They held a draw until substitution Polter (78) scored from close range. Wolfsburg are now in "no mans land" of the table, Koeln -with 21 points- tops the drop- zone.

FC Nuernberg- Hertha BSC 2:0 (1:0)

One of the lesser attractive matches of the week. Both teams are struggling against relegation- and it showed. Little technique, lots of infights- all in all, not a nice match to watch. Nuernberg will care little about that, as goals by Esswein (43) and Maroh (83) secured 3 points, that might prove vital at the end of the season.

Borussia Moenchengladbach- Bayern Muenchen 3:1 (2:0)

The biggest surprise of this result is not a Gladbach- victory per se...but the manner in which it came about. Sure: Goalkeeper Neuers desasterous mistake gave way...but Gladbach clearly dominated a weak Bayern- team. Reus and Hermann (17, 41) shot Gladbach ahead in the first half and Hermann added a third goal after 71 minutes. Bayern was at no time anywhere near an equalizer and had to settle with a concelation- goal by Schweinsteiger after 76 minutes.

Standings:

1. Bayern München 18 44 : 13 +31 37 pts

2. Borussia Dortmund 18 40 : 13 +27 37 pts

3. FC Schalke 04 18 41 : 23 +18 37 pts

4. B. Mönchengladbach 18 28 :12 +16 36 pts

5. Werder Bremen 18 30 : 31 -1 30 pts

6. Bayer Leverkusen 18 25 : 24 +1 29 pts

7. Hannover 96 18 20 : 24 -4 24 pts

8. 1899 Hoffenheim 18 19 : 19 0 23 pts

9. VfL Wolfsburg 18 24 : 34 -10 23 pts

10.VfB Stuttgart 18 24 : 23 +1 22 pts

11. 1. FC Köln 18 27 : 36 -9 21 pts

12. 1. FC Nürnberg 18 19 : 28 -9 21 pts

13. Hertha BSC Berlin 18 24 : 28 -4 20 pts

14. Hamburger SV 18 22 : 32 -10 19 pts

15. 1. FSV Mainz 05 18 24 : 32 -8 18 pts

16. 1. FC Kaiserslautern 18 13 : 21 -8 17 pts

17. SC Freiburg 18 22: 39 -17 16 pts

18. FC Augsburg 18 15: 29 -14 15 pts

Results of matchday 19:

Hannover 96 – FC Nuernberg 1:0

It was a match with different halves, the specators were seeing in Hannover. In the beginning, the hosts were clearly the better and more active team. The 1:0- lead was totally deserved, when Abdellaoue scored after only 18 minutes. Second half saw a Nuernberg- team that was not willing to go quietly. They created more chances and in the end, Hannover was lucky to have the 3 points.

Werder Bremen – Bayer Leverkusen 1:1 (1:0)

It was an even match between the two table- neighbors, with Bremen having the better start and a well deserved goal by Pizarro (29). Bayer got a better start to the second half, with an early goal by Reinartz (57), before Werder took control again. In the end, splitting points was a deserved result, that keeps both opponents Euro- League hopes alive.

Hertha BSC Berlin – Hamburger SV 1:2 (0:2)

It was not football- delight in Berlin, more a struggle from both teams. Hamburg off to a better start and in control most of the match. Jansen (24) and Petric (45+1) put the club from north in a comfortable position, even before halftime. It was not before Hertha got one goal back by Lasogga (81), before there was some excitement. Hamburg got rehabilitated after last weeks crushing by Dortmund, Berlin has to keep an eye on the drop- zone now.

FC Augsburg – FC Kaiserslautern 2:2 (1:1)

No treat for fans of a technical game, but an intense match with many goal- scenes on both sides.

The hosts had the better start with De Jongs goal after 5 minutes, but 2 goals by Kaiserslauterns Florian Dick (25, 48...by the way “dick” in German is “fat”...so no stupid cock- jokes, please!) made the pendulum swing the other way. After 65 minutes the newly substituted Hain scored a well deserved equalizer. Looking at the standings, unfortunately this draw is not a big help for either team in the fight against relegation.

Borussia Dortmund- TSV Hoffenheim 3:1 (2:0)

The reigning champion presented excellent football- entertainment with fast forward- orientated football. Hoffenheim (like last week Hamburg) didn't stand a real chance. Japanese international Kagawa scored his first of two goals after 16 minutes and Grosskreutz scored another before halftime (31). Kagawas second (55) made it all clear for Dortmund- even a goal by Johnson (63) didn't provide any danger. Dortmund is still on the way to defend their title, Hoffenheim is getting too close to the drop- zone for comfort.

Bayern Muenchen – VFL Wolfsburg 2:0 (0:0)

Record- champion Bayern defended their top spot in the league by winning comfortably against Wolfsburg. But to be honost: it was a garstly display by both teams. Bayern in control, but lacking esprit, Wolfsburg miles away from Coach Maghats Europa- dreams. Goals by Ribery (60) and Gomez (90+2) secured 3 important point for Bayern in the title- race. Wolfsburg should better have alook down, rather than up the table.

FC Koeln- Schalke 04 1:4 (1:0)

Favorites Schlake had to fight an early Koeln lead by Podolski (4). This early goal made the game very tense with good chances produced on both side. Schalke took more and more control of the game and got 2 goals by Marica (60, 72) to turn the match around. After those 2 shocks, Koeln litterally fell apart and Schalke scored to more by Huntelaar 78) and Hoeger (82). This win keeps Schalke level on points with Bayern and Dortmund at the top of the table, Koeln is definitely in danger now and suffered another blow, when defender Brecko was sent off after 78 minutes.

Mainz 05- SC Freiburg 3:1 (3:0)

The match went off to be a good one after 3 early goals by Choupo- Moting (3,17) and Polanski (pen,6)...but lost momentum very early, so it became just another boring match from the bottom of the table. Freiburg scored a concellation goal (Krmas, 68)...and that was it. Both teams stay in danger of relegation, with Mainz seeking a midfield place now and Freiburg being bottom-team again.

VFB Stuttgart – Borussia Moenchengladbach 0:3 (0:1)

One of the biggest -if not THE biggest- surprises of this years competition remains Moenchengladbach. Last year they got nearly relegated, this year they keep close contact with the top- trio. In a mostly average match, Gladbach was the dominant squad and took control most of the time. Hanke (31) put Gladbach ahead and Stuttgart in the position to counter the guests efforts- they were not able to deliver. Reus (81) and Carmargo (84) nailed home the match and let's Gladbachs tender championship dreams blossom. Stuttgart is trailing in no- man's- land of the table.

Bayern Muenchen 19 46:13 (+33) 40 pts

Borussia Dortmund 19 43:14 (+29) 40 pts

Schalke 04 19 45:24 (+21) 40 pts

Borussia Moenchengladbach 19 31:12 (+19) 39 pts

Werder Bremen 19 31:32 (-1) 31 pts

Bayer Leverkusen 19 26:25 (+1) 30 pts

Hannover 96 19 21:24 (-3) 27 pts

TSV Hoffenheim 19 20:22 (-2) 23 pts

VFL Wolfsburg 19 24:36 (-12) 23 pts

VFB Stuttgart 19 24:26 (-2) 22 pts

Hamburger SV 19 24:33 (-9) 22 pts

Mainz 05 19 27:33 (-6) 21 pts

FC Nuernberg 19 19:29 (-10) 21 pts

FC Koeln 19 28:40 (-12) 21 pts

Hertha BSC Berlin 19 25:30 (-5) 20 pts

FC Kaiserslautern 19 15:23 (-8) 18 pts

FC Augsburg 19 17:31 (-14) 16 pts

SC Freiburg 19 23:42 (-19) 16 pts

Hallo Naam,

good to see you posting in this thread. And congratulations to your favourites, the Royal Blues. A bit sad story about the sickness of their former Manager Rudi Assauer. Hope he can cope with it.

And yes, I am of course delighted to see my Hamburg team as well on the winning end. Hope this will give them some encouragement for the coming weekend match against Bavaria Munich.

Well done HSV and Thorsten Fink!
