Shark Fin Campaigners at Pattaya Underwater World Park

PATTAYA: -- A small group of campaigners, who want the culling of sharks to stop, held a press conference at the Pattaya Underwater World Park in Jomtien on Monday. The group, consisting of Freelance Dive Masters and students from the Mahidol University in Bangkok are campaigning against the culling of sharks and the use of their fins in a popular dish consumed during the Chinese New Year Festive period, Shark Fin Soup. The group held banners which also warned that Shark Fins contain a high level of Mercury. Ironically, the fins themselves are tasteless and are valued only for their texture. The taste comes only from the soup they are placed in. Some species of Shark are close to extinction however Shark Fin Soup originates from the Chinese Ming Dynasty and is considered by Chinese as one of the eight treasured foods from the sea.

These misinformed people never answer the question of what to do with the thousands of tons of shark fins that are the by product of the shark fisihing industry. On the Indian sub continent shark meat is the staple dish of millions of poor coastal people. The fins are dried and exported to east asia where there is a demand. This gives the fishermen a little bit extra income. Even though the fins are sold at less than the meat

These campaigners also seem very ignorant too. Sharks fins are pretty tasteless but they are not made tasty but putting them in soup. They are shipped dried from South Asia where they undergo an expensive and lengthy processing at thier destination which then makes them a valuable product.

Perhaps they aslo don't know that in Australia and New Zealand shark meat is extensively used for making " fish & chips" a very popular dish. What do they expect them to do with the sharks fins? Throw them away

The main objection to Sharks Fin being used as a delicacy in soup is that the vast majority of the fins are obtained by "finning"; dedicated fishing boats catch sharks, cut off the fins and throw the still living shark back into the sea to die.

This is absolute nonsense. This criminal activity accounts for only a very minute portion of shark fins. This absolutely never happenss where shark is caiught for it meat. Why should a fishefrman throw the shark away and keep the fins when the meat is far more valuable. The fins have little value until they are processed

The criminals involved in "Finning" are not fishermen. They should be caught and heavily punished. They are like people who shoot dolphins from a boat for sport.

I am afraid you are the one who knows nothing about "Finning".

Look it up - Google, wherever.

We - well, I at least - am not talking about situations where Sharks are caught for their meat.

The "Finning" boats are usually quite small and as I say they are dedicated to catching Sharks, de-finning them, and throwing the rest overboard.

Not only are the Fins by far the most valuable part of the Shark, they are also by far the smallest and lightest parts - the Finning boats have no space to store the meat, they are not at all interested in the meat, they use all available capacity to keep the Fins and the rest is simply discarded.

By FAR most Shark Fin available in restaurants is obtained via these boats.

You are correct sir. That's why some large hotels such as Shangri-La chain have banned shark-fin soup.

Yes, Finning is a big issue, it is cruel and barbaric.

Why are they protesting at Pattaya Underwater Park World?

Would it not be better to protest at the restaurants that sell Shark Fin Soup?

this is from google!

The truth is this: Sharks will continue to be caught and killed on a wide scale by the more organized and sophisticated fishing nations. Targeting shark's fin soup will not stop this accidental catch. The fins from these catches will be thrown away or turned into animal feed and fertilizers if shark's fin soup is shunned."

Maybe read the thread on the gun fight between drinking water companies in Pattaya and this may answer your question....wink.png

I do not know where you get you figures from but there is a worldwide issue with fishermen deliberately targeting sharks, cutting their fins off and tossing the live carcases back into the sea, twice in the last few weeks I have seen TV documentaries showing this happening, in this case on both instances it was Indonesian fishermen poaching in Australian waters but in reality it is happening worldwide and it is not just a small number of fishermen doing this, it is eperdemic and while there is a market for sharks fins at preamium rates it will continue to happen.

sadly you are not in possession of the whole picture. THe Shark fin industry is HUGE - and supplies China whose increasing wealth has increased demand exponentially.

The industry throws away the live, de-finned sharks........in vast numbers - this is not the same as catching for a community who eat the whole animal and maybe make a bonus by selling on the fins.
