Coming from Tak Global comes up on your right, perchance there's a gap in the central reservation right opposite the road you need to go down If you miss it you will have to go to the Traffic lights a couple of KM and do a U turn. Hope to see you for Coffees.

I don't know of the Tak Beef market some info on that, where and what do they sell yes I know it's Beef what sort of cuts size etc would be a help.

Thanks in advance.

H/M.

Fred.

The place is called 'Tak Beef co-op' and yes they sell beef. You can get most popular cuts if you know the Thai names. I remember there being a butchers diagram with pictorial views of the various cuts, so if you know your beef you can just point at the diagram.

The beef is fresh or frozen. It's better to phone an order through if you want fresh as they don't have it every day and what isn't sold on the day gets frozen Last time I got; chuck rib eye and filet mignon. I rest the beef for between 10 and 20 days before cooking or freezing. One woman spoke some English but she usually wasn't the person who answered the phone.

I have two telephone numbers: 0822278976 and 055511934.

You'll find the place easily enough. Just drive to Tak and turn right on Hwy 12 (going to Sukhothai). I'm not sure about the distance but the place is on the right just after the point where the road widens. You'll see a large concrete Hereford at the entrance. If you get as far as the main gate to the infantry barracks (on the left), you've gone too far.

There used to be a restaurant on the road out to Lampang which sold their beef, but that closed down more than a year ago. It wasn't very good anyway, so no great loss. That was the last time we visited the co-op.

Jerry

Thanks for that Jerry yes I do know it, did once eat at the restaurant you mentioned and as you say pretty rough. The restaurant used to be on the left just before the BKK Granite company that's on the right some 2/3 km further on, very good if you need any of same as they are cheap as well as cut and finish any size you want, they also speak very good English, just a bit of trivia.

I will give it a go next time I'm that way.

Once again thanks.

Major Problems have befallen H/M in the last couple of days.

Just heard from Embassy about my royal status seems there could be some delaying problems they have suggested that if I want it completed rapid I will have to marry either Princes Beatrice & Eugenie as I have seen the hat's, I just don't fancy being knocked about by their bridal train whilst escaping down the aisle.

Then CTH they have put up their price some time ago and now they are charging 1,069bt a month or as Mrs H/M told me ten thousand and sixty ninety nine bt thats 10,699bt for one year in advance. They do supply their system all over Thailand for more info they have a customer service No: 1619 but don't bother with that as you will be waiting till next Christmas before you get through, the one that work's is 023283456 they can sort out any of your problems fixing installing the dish etc, payment is via the BKK bank.

The third and you'll be glad to hear the last is that H/M new fridge a large glass fronted one that they use in bars that I acquired 6 months ago has gone on the blink died yesterday afternoon, the shop that I got it from has now picked it up and will repair it under guarantee H/M feel's the compressor is no more only hope that the new one they will fit will last a trite longer other wise it could start working out an expensive buy not to mention being without cold beers.

Off in a day or two for a short break hopefully to get away from all these problems.

No news on the great bridge here, work seems perilously slow as usual, I would be giving it the wide berth for a long time, I know someone heading that way today will see if there is any further news.

Crickey Fred, you must be dustraught when watching the West Ham Utd, the Hummers if you like on Thai TV with all the "ah hoe", "kup and Kap" etc, the TV's here in N/S are all remote control and we can turn the sound down! I know its a bit advanced but this the technological hub of the centre of Thailand, KPP is just a dead end from the hub.

You should get out more, come down to the city the never sleeps where sofistication and style go hand in hand where technology meets tomorrow, haut cuisine is a by word best food in the land and where KPP's latest washing can be seen passing by on the way to Bangkok ( still attached to the washing line, post and pegs).

Nakhon Sawan welcomes and awaits world travellers and countryfolk to step into the world of tomorrow, not forgetting to sample the noodles and visit the Noodle museum, Noodle Farm and Noddle City!

Have you ever thought that N/S never sleeps because there's so much traffic about trying to get through the jams over the bridge the din keeps everyone awake.

Talking of food H/M dined out lunchtime yesterday and pleased to say that the food was superb. What did I consume well amongst several dishes one called Dub Won, sorry to say you wont be able to get that in N/S "the hub of food allegedly" because it's very tender Liver thinly sliced and served with crispy veg and a very nice sauce must say it was delish.

Don't panic any of you peeps that WILL be stuck in traffic jams while you Buddha forbid visit travel through N/S you can always fall back by supping on a Big Mick with a soggy bun or is the bum ??? or even Fish & chips with 'brown sauce' so I'm lead to believe.

Alas there's so much drivel coming out of the local noodle shops/stalls lately there one doesn't quite know what's going on.

Thailand answer to Haut cuisine, I've heard it all now, pass the next bowl of noodles please.

H/M is getting himself ready for the next W/H game with jolly old Spurs live on my CTH in a week or two time, with all the commentary in English.

Tomorrow Mrs H/M sister Noo 'the rat' will be arriving she'll be looking after our pedigree Soi dog snapper, + the talking bird, not to mention controlling all the staff at H/M mansion's whilst we are away.

No news yet on H/M fridge I suppose I shall have to pop along to Mike's tonight for my ice cold imported beer.

Point of order I did try one of those dark Paulander beers the other night an wasn't overly impressed prefer the Erdinger dark sorry about that Jerry. Orf now as have to inform the chauffeur to clean the Limo ready for my trip.

DUB ONE COULD NOT HAVE PUT IT BETTER. I thought you were agin liver especially in noodles, what the betting that at West Ham games you get noodles and liver in your pies! So you playing the Yiddos then looks like draw to me, lucky for you its early in the season and your hair has not fallen out yet eh? Grows quickly here in the close season though.

I am up for the cricket, starts 7th at Old Trafford, England ( all kneel down and worship ) against the Indians from India, its 1 -1 and all to play for, 5 days of heaven on earth ( Oh I say thats Nakhon Sawan as well! ).

Tonight I am trying to lose a bit a of weight so just a few bags of crisps ( salmon and caviar flavour of course ) even our noodles are coming in excotic flavours now, but thats for another time.

Celebrities seen in N/S lately ( apart from Elvis Presley--regular visitor ) Marilyn Munroe ( 7-11), John Wayne ( Big C Majoy complex ), Alan Whicker ( riverside market ). Air Marshall Sir Hugh Dowding ( N/S international airport and crop spraying facility.), Dr Robert Beeching ( Paknampho station), Mickey Mouse ( bus station on his way to KPP), Captain Sensible, not going further north.

H/M like's liver that's why I was a bit peed orf that N/S doesn't seem to sell any of same.

What goes into our pies I haven't a clue but meat isn't one of them that's for sure not unlike your Noodles as it happens.

Latest report from W/H wed site is that things will improve when we move into out new stadium.

Regards the Yiddos please correct me if I'm wrong but didn't we beat them in all three matches last year 3/0 2/1 and 2/0 springs to mind.

We even have a tee shirt that states we did the treble out of stock at present so you cant get one even for ready monies.

Salmon and Caviar crisps indeed I can see you now wandering round N/S label round your neck stating he smells a bit but he's quite harmless go's by the name of David if found can you wipe the dribble away from his chin and kindly return to the funny farm a small reward can be obtained from the front desk for doing same.

For all's information we have had Elvis here does your one resemble a Chinese man as well, as luck would have it H/M and clan were just about to leave the restaurant and only had to sit through a couple of songs Yerrow Libber and On the sustreet where you Lib if I remember correctly, that night was a bit of a bummer as they seemed to be delaying the return of every ones change I think it was to try and slow down the exodus of all the hoards. Didn't work with H/M I just left the change and put it down to yet another N/S interloper trying to sneak in.

What English game have you been watching, all hale the British team!!! they are at best rubbish our only hope is if we get rained orf.

Orf to sort out my Fridge now, update as and when but I'm not holding my breath on that one or any cold beers come to that at the moment.

I have a couple of cold tinnies in my fridge, one of 3 at home, but then again I am just po' white trash living in the hills.

As you know we also have several fridges but this new one is rather large it can accommodate well over 30 ++ large beer's on one shelf and it was full up with goodies all of same have now had to be put in the other one's that are not even in the kitchen so it's a route Rout AM march to get my milk and they to say the least are crammed to the gunnels so there's no room for my beers dash pore show if you ask me.

Update on the fridge they are still looking into it that's from Mrs H/M who phone them today, H/M will have yet more info tomorrow as I shall be going in first hand to sort the problem out and woe betide them if I don't get some up to date info. I might even post photos of Mrs H/M all over their windows that'll put the fear of Buddha up their customers.

Off out now for some comestible with the rat Noo Mrs H/M sister here in after to be known as the minder. Who by the way got stuck in N/S opposite the uni just before the bridge today seems the coach had overheating problems all down to the traffic and a new one had to be supplied to complete the journey only two hour's late well done N/S another huge bugger up.

Have you escaped the funny farm again Dave about time they put stronger locks on the door's, me thinks one of those electric tags is needed.

Update on H/M fridge, in I go this morning and as luck would have it they were working on it. Seems it has lost all of it's gas so their putting that right, and then testing it over night and tomorrow if all OK will deliver back on Sunday. See Dave it wasn't the spring in the clockwork motor.

We also have thousands of places selling fridges in K.P.P all sell the normal ones with little or no room inside time you discount the freezer box and the waist of space veggie box at the bottom your left with 3 shelves at best try and get 30+ large beer on one of those. Commercial glass fronted one is what you want just the thing till it go's wrong.

Everton & Arsenil all in Thai sounds just the thing but it's not their first game that's on the 16th against C Palace. Kick orf at 9pm Thai & it's also in Cups and uuuuuuuuuu.

In your travels today see if they have moved the overheated bus that the Minder started her journey in from BKK. It stopped at the Raj Uni just south of the bridge.

We don't seem to have any of the latest news from Bill regarding his trip to N/S visa office just wondering what he consumed while he was there maybe he's suffering from some sort of food poisoning.

H/M is orf early tomorrow for his trip down south I see that there could be lots of traffic just north of BKK according to the very up to date post on our section only hope I miss it.

At least our hotel will be ok Mrs H/M has just had a confirmation from them that's great H/M wont be sleeping in the Limo or tank as Bill calls it.

Now then have been under the U-turn by the river to view the "non-working cranes", not much action going on but it looks like they are trying to drive piles into the river, one of the cranes looks to supporting a pile driver and something new in the water cylindrical, the supports are already in place next the new bridge on the north side. If they putting another lane in in the gap bewteen the two bridges progress is painful and there seems no hurry so this could be going on for a long time.

Sounds like there are a lot fridge shops in KPP and very little else, still you know where to go for fridge now, all vintage and heritage models, if you want the latest best come south from the land that time forgot and make tracks for Thailands new Techno hub.

With the way the "strip" looks at night with all the flashing neon lights Nakhon Sawan is fast becoming the Las Vegas of Thailand ( obviously without the gambling) complete with the ever popular chiken boxing at the "Sands" not far from the riverside. I can see why people flock here to endulge themselves in the finest cuisine in Thailand if not the Far East! Where the entertainment never ends, where high society mingles with the hoi puloi from nearby provinces, where people who want to get a life are to be seen parading along the spacious boulevards, cruising along the riverside super highway, where the future becomes reality and today becomes tomorrow.

Unlike KPP where people spend their days talking about fridges.

The Beast had it's first Thai meal yesterday afternoon, ข้าวโพด (K̄ĥāwphod), corn. A few minor adjustments were required due to the small size of the cobs because of lack of rain, but she ate well. It looks like the yield this year will be 65 -70% of last year due to the drought.

As far as the Las Vegas - no gambling - of Thailand, I'll pass especially with the wonderful bridge construction. The best cuisine that I ever had was from the cart across Sawanvitee from the Nissan Dealer that sold Tom Yum Noodles at lunch, she always ran out early!

N/S noodles, finest in all Thailand, come in all shapes and sizes, indeed Nakhon Sawan I can see it now...............The mecca for noodles, people will arrive at the International airport and high speed rail station to spend a holiday just consuming noodles, then by way of a change a quick day trip over the border to see the Mecca of fridges in KPP, speak to the jovial but rather odd curator of the KPP fridge museum and owner of the fridge Emporium ( formerly the Stables- so best take some pegs ), then hurry back to civilization and even more of those noodles and caviar, then have your picture taken by the river, currently with the cranes before taking a tour of the Sawan Park nightlife, lifes good in Nakhon Sawan. We even have fridges but we dont make a song and dance of it.

H/M has returned from his jaunt down south went Friday night as the Mods had kindly posted that there could be a big hold up just north of BKK.

I see that they have let Dave out yet again I think its time to have a get together and find him a nice very secure place to rest his head, to many Noodles H/M suspects.

Right how was my trip, all went well even having to go most of the way in the dark not a good thing on Thai roads.

Dined well on sea food without a Noodle in sight you'll be glad to hear. I've seen what's its done to pore old Dave..

Update on roads the new road now almost completed from K.P.Phet into Noodle stalls is now quite good but saying that the road out up north still leaves a lot to be desired bundles of pot holes abound. I also notice that they are in the throws of putting a new sign on the welcome to K.P.Phet brick wall not sure what it will say yet as they had only put two squiggly bits on as I went past earlier.

H/M fridge has been repaired and as I tap is plodding away in the Kitchen we don't use for cooking in, it's a Mrs H/M thing, After I have finished this tapping I shall be putting all my beers back in, only hope that it will last a few more days before it go's on the blink yet again.

Update as and when.

Get well soon Dave we are all routing for you.

What is the fridge selection like down south then, any good models available?

Why dont you buy a new fridge if here are so many to choose from in KPP or are they all heritage models? Work on shillings perhaps.

Blimey what sort of a life is it that fridges are the main talkining point! What about freezers, got them up your way, oh just a tip you need to plug them in and turn the power on and keep the door closed , I know it magic how the light comes on when you open it but your beer will be warm and we cant have that can we!

toodle oo, must get out more Fred, just like us swingers down in the big city.

Swingers swingers noodlers more like for your information we have two very large deep freezes and three fridges all now seem to be working fine the glass fronted one that went on the blink has a light on all the time if you want it to, it enables you to see what delight's are on offer without peeking into it.

Alas it doesn't have smelly vision good thing at times as H/M got some very pongy Cheese from down south had some tonight and delish it was too, only problem everything in it seems to now smell the same thank Buddha we don't have any Thai food none of that smelly dead long time fish that can taint it.

Orf for and early night now as a trite buggered after the tiring drive back. When some Thai plonker tried to run me into the central barrier at 140kph but that another story.

The Beast having it's first Thai meal this past weekend. The moisture content is still too high but it will be ready to start feasting in about 2 weeks! A long way from what it looked like when it arrived on May 1 but after a lot of trials and tribulations I think she's finally there!

The bridge over the river is still closed, went under it yesterday, they seem to have put some metal pipes into the river adjacent to the bridge supports, they look like the pipes that are supposed to send any flood water back into the river at first glance, but progress is painfully slow.

Ok Dave what are they doing to the centre bridge are they making it wider to accommodate yet more traffic or just tarting it up a trite. A full update is required.

The last time H/M went over it thank Buddha ages ago it was flowing ok north bound bit of an over statement more like the usual crawl even so it didn't help much as the left two lane bridge was chocker block just to get passed the clock 'that by the way is on the blink again' seemed to take forever. H/M suggest you hurry along and get us the full nitty gritty.

Right Wayne.

Question I have looked at your very good snaps regarding the corn plucking beast and I see that it not only picks the corn it strips same.

I don't want to know how it works I would really but as that would take forever and a day.

What I am interested in is what how is it processed and what do they use it for.

I know all about corn on the cob not seen much of that sold here only already cooked but the niblets do they can/freeze it or turn it into some kind of animal feed. An update when you have time would be appreciated. I've always been a nosey bugger.

Life in the upper class K.P.P city plods on just the same little or no traffic. Just though you might like to hear something good for a change. And H/M fridge is still going albeit it does hum/smell some what due to the French cheese that H/M found while I was down south.

Soon to be gone just like the afore mentioned hum.

The corn that you eat, nib-lets or corn on the cob, is usually sweet corn, not field corn and is harvested and processed when it is fresh, not dry. Field corn has many uses. I'm lazy so I'll quote Wikipedia, referred to as maize:

"Maize is a major source of starch. Cornstarch (maize flour) is a major ingredient in home cooking and in many industrialized food products. Maize is also a major source of cooking oil (corn oil) and of maize gluten. Maize starch can be hydrolyzed and enzymatic-ally treated to produce syrups, particularly high-fructose corn syrup, a sweetener; and also fermented and distilled to produce grain alcohol. Grain alcohol from maize is traditionally the source of Bourbon whiskey. Maize is sometimes used as the starch source for beer. Within the United States, the usage of maize for human consumption constitutes about 1/40th of the amount grown in the country. In the United States and Canada, maize is mostly grown to feed for livestock, as forage, silage (made by fermentation of chopped green cornstalks), or grain. Maize meal is also a significant ingredient of some commercial animal food products, such as dog food"

It is dry when it is harvested and not edible although if you pick it before it drys it can and is eaten the same as sweet corn.

The beast picks the corn, removes the husks, removes the kernels from the cob and stores it in a hopper in the combine. It is then unloaded from the hopper,by and auger in the long arm. into trucks and taken to the mill for processing. The corn needs to be dry, less than 30% moisture content, for the beast to process it and to keep it from molding after harvest.

It's hard to believe that you don't know this, you must have been living a very sheltered life.

Although the harvest this year is 35-40% down from last year, the price is up. This year we are getting about 750 kilos per Rai, last year it was well over 1000 kilos per Rai. However, this year the price is 9000 baht /ton, last year it was only around 7000 baht/ton, so the ROI will be down a little but will be very close to last year do to the price increase.

Hope that this helps and I won't be hit by the "work permit Brigade" for teaching without a permit or a license! I can see the headlines now:

"Farang deported and blacklisted for teaching another Farang all about corn harvesting!"
