It's no wonder that Firefox is losing ground to Chrome. I totally uninstalled Firefox including all the information. There is an extension called General Crawler 2.0 that I did not install and I can't get rid of it. After I downloaded the latest release that extension is still there. The check spelling as you type also doesn't work.

Has anyone else noticed these problems. The General Crawler 2.0 is disabled but since I didn't put it there, I don't want it there. I have no idea what it does but it can't be good.

Have not got it on my Firefox 10.0.2 but Google search of General Crawler 2 shows a few people have had the same prob, ie cannot uninstall from add ons.

Appears have to manually remove it from profile.

For spell check go to Tools, Options, Advanced, General Tab and make sure "check my spelling as i type" is checked

Thanks for the help but I have decided that since this has been a problem for quite some time and Firefox seems to pay no attention to the complaints, that I don't need Firefox. I have Chrome for my default browser with IE 9 and Safari as backup browsers.

The "check my spelling as I type" was indeed checked and my feedback to Mozilla was ignored. I have done a total uninstall and really won't miss Firefox.

Agree Firefox does seem to be shooting itself in the foot. Am trying to wean myself off of the add ons before switching away from firefox.

Am increasingly using SRWare Iron which is a fork of Chrome, using same engine and compatible with chrome add ons. It is supposed to be better in the privacy area as it has had the communicate with Google bits removed. Hype or not am not sure. Is updated as often as chrome (runs the same version no.) and is said to be slightly faster, but definitely faster than FF.

Still unclear how General Crawler gets installed . Firefox 10 (9 as well, I think) is supposed to stop unsolicited add ons being installed.

I have FF 10.0.02 on my Win 7 32 bit home desktop, automatically updated by FF from the various prior versions... It's been a continuous program since the last time I manually installed a much prior version a couple years ago.

I have no sign of any General Crawler add-on either in my add-ons list or my plug-ins list.

For me FF seems to get worse not better, since they started with the inflated version numbers.

I use Chrome now 50% and daily more.

Have used Firefox since their first release. Up to 11 + on their beta channel. No problems whatsoever. The only thing I have noticed is that it sometimes shuts down an add on, but the next revision or two makes it work again. Hate Internet explorer for many years, and tried Chrome and dislike it too.

One thing I found is to make sure your other programs are up to date with the latest versions. We are in a high tech, fast moving world where everything is not going to work all the time. Good luck solving your current problems with your software.

I'm also on the FF 11.0+ Beta and no problems. Never heard of the General Crawler add-on. Then again don't use a lot of the add-ons. Figure the less cluttered, the better. Or I'm a semi-luddite and want to avoid trouble. whistling.gif

I use ff and a lot of add-ons, such that I'm kind of lost without them.

OP: no need to re-install FF. The add-ins are part of the user profile. Assuming you're using Windows 7, shut down ff, then go to the directory

C:\Users\(user_name)\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles

where user_name is your name

there will be a directory in there that contains all your bookmarks, add-ins, etc. Rename the directory, and when you restart ff it should give you a clean start, with no add-ins, bookmarks, etc.

Eliminate the old profile dir at your convenience, I suggested you only rename it at first so you can go back and salvage your data.

If you want to play around with profile selection a little, have a look at the file

C:\Users\(user_name)\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\profiles.ini

and look at these:

For some reason this doesn't work for TV in ff, it has been mentioned in other threads. In my experience it works everywhere else I've tried.
