BANGKOK: -- The Iranian who lost both his legs in the February 14 explosions has been charged with four offences, including the attempted murder of policemen on duty, but remains silent on his motives and the source of explosives he was possessing, deputy national police chief Pansiri Praphawat said yesterday.

The officer said that after two hours of grilling, Saeid Moradi admitted that he owned the explosives found in a rented Bangkok house, that he had set them off and that he had lobbed grenades at a taxi and a police car chasing him. A lawyer and an interpreter were present during the questioning.

Pansiri said Moradi refused to say what motivated him to prepare the explosives and why he was making radio bombs inside the house near Pridi Banomyong Road, or how he was linked with the other four suspects, all Iranian nationals. Moradi will be indicted tomorrow and put under court custody if he is discharged from hospital.

He said the five suspects' operation was similar to a recent incident in India, especially in the way magnets were used to attach bombs to the vehicles of targets, though police have yet to decide on whether to press terrorism charges against Moradi and the other suspects.

Dr Phongsathorn Sukhosit, who treated the suspect in Police General Hospital, said Moradi was in a good state of mind to provide statements, though the wounds in his left leg and right eye were still infected.

"He could be discharged in a week or two," he added.

Moradi also admitted to acquiring two used motorcycles that were seized by police but would not say what he was planning to do with them. The suspect had also stayed at the Nasa Vega condominium with Masoud Sedaghatzadeh, who is currently in custody in Malaysia.

Stickers with the word SEJEAL were found at the condo and pasted at several locations along a route in Bangkok that is reportedly used by Israeli diplomats.

talk about hitting a man when he's down... taking advantage of a man without a leg to stand on.... etc. etc.

.

That hospital looks like very nice digs. Surprising that the Thai secret service couldn't "motivate" the Iranian to expose his friends. Even more surprising, that the Thais would admit this. Gives rise to the question as to whether the Thais are really trying. Maybe the "cordial" relations between Iran and Thailand take precedence. The last time that a big Iranian blew in to town to state that no one in Thailand was a target and that no Iranians were involved in terrorism, the Thais were very keen to suppress news about the terrorists. Now they are admitting defeat.

As the government is pushing for the 'it wasn't terrorism, it was perhaps not even planned targeted killings, it might be loud Songkran celebration preparations', the DSI is ofcourse not going to lean in extra hard to get a terrorist-confession by this man. Cannot have anything that threatens tourism - everything here already does that so well already.

"...though police have yet to decide on whether to press terrorism charges against Moradi and the other suspects." Didn't all politician and police insistingly deny that there was an act of terrorism in BKK at all?

Could the one link that a killed over 5,000 people in the southern provinces have any thing to do with it.

Road side bombs and suicide bombs are not uncommon to these people.

And if you speak out against their views they feel justified in violence. Happens in many parts of the world.

Nothing to do with Southern unrest....they get their support from groups based in Malaysia, not Iran. Suicide bombings also not carried out in Southern provinces as yet.

You missed the whole point. There is a reason these things happen world wide and are all related by one factor under many excuses.

What is the reason?

I would have thought there is only one Excuse "In the name of Allah"

We had another member here recently post a summary of something from the BKK Post claiming that Malaysia isn't planning to extradite the other guy back to Thailand, and instead was planning to send him back to Iran.

I don't know if that's true or not. And The Nation article above is silent on the subject, other than that the other guy apparently remains for now in Malaysia... It will be very interesting to see whether the other guy does in the end get sent back to Thailand or not. I sure hope he doesn't get toddled off back to Iran.

Why has this story even made the press? It is clear that this was terrorism in one form or another. The priority is to find out if it is going to happen again? Therefore nothing should have been released until they had connected his b****x to 240V and caused a surge in the hospitals electricity bill. Either that or as one poster has already said, perhaps he needs a little coercion at bath time with the help of some water boarding. Either way he would have been singing like a canary already.

the day after this story broke, Iranian authorities promised to assist Thai investigators 'in every way possible.' We knew it was bullsh*t then, and we know it's bullsh*t now. Iranian officaldom wants to be in close to the investigation, so they can <deleted> it up and/or re-direct incriminating evidence as soon as it arises. If Iran wanted to assist, one of the most tangible actions it could take is to send the two women suspects (from Iran) to Thailand to be interviewed by investigators. The biggest fear Iran has is if Israeli or western investigators get actively involved - then they know the chips might really fall to their detriment - as western investigators are head and shoulders more adept than their Thai counterparts.

Good to hear he has admitted to the blast. Must have been presented with hard proof he did it.

Hope the Police keep on their toes over this one. None of us want to see this terrorist relaxing and putting his feet up. Sometimes you think the final result is a shoe in..but things happen and you get tripped up.

Well I fail to see how it could fall to Iran's detriment, after all everybody blames Iran anyway, and that was before any questioning, so why even bother to question him? The only issue is if he does not come out with a story that would consolidate the blame on Iran. Seems the last thing the west want is for this guy to be questioned. The blame is already apportioned.
