Had the misfortune today to decide to go out to Lunch

with another Farang and respective wives

Our first port of call was a small place in town opposite

the college going out of Thoeng towards Chaing Khulm

but this was closed today because of death in owners

family

So we drove another 10o meters down the road where

you can turn right towards Longchere

You cant miss the turning because of its diobolical first

50 metres.

Travelled about 7 k until there is a entrance on the right

just before the road bends into a restaurant by a lake.

Todays visit not the first but definatley the last

First we made the mistake of asking if they did French Fries

instead of Rice which my wife translted to them as Man Falang

Yes was the answer

What did we get 2 x 20 Baht Packets of Lau Crisps fried in Batter.

My Friends Pork was just about passable but the trippings were not

My Chicken comprised of Gristly bits which were uneatable

transpired that the main cook was not there today and seeing

Farangs thought they could serve poor standard

Complaining was not a option as there was no one there who

could speak english and our wives did not want to lose face

and adopted the It does not matter attitude

Needless to say the party planned to be there later this week will be elsewhere

A simple mai aroi,mai suk sabai,mai dee,with slight gesturing and some face pulling often works.

I don't loose face being a westerner so why would I hide my dissatisfaction at a crap meal,my Thai may not be the best but I can get my point across,wether or not that has any effect is grounds for a separate thread.

If? So you apparently didn't read that far into his OP.

But to answer, I can think of a number of reasons. I speak a little Thai -- but it's Bangkok Thai and I don't have a great accent. So my wife translates for those who do not understand my 'accent'. She also translates for those who mainly speak Issan.

One of my Thai buddies who moved from BKK to CR had to have his Northern wife translate the Northern language (kham muang?) on numerous occasions. Should he "learn some Thai"?

But you apparently have, and expect all farangs to have, perfect colloquial fluency in Thai and all the local languages. Would that include Khmer for those lads over in Surin and surrounds?

What do you expect in a very rural Thai restaurant when you order fried crisps or chips. Fried potato means nothing to rural Thai's.

Rural people do not eat or know anything about French Fries.

In Rural Thailand, the OP's order would translate to Fried Lays Potato Chips, and the OP got what he ordered. So no offense to the Op's wife... she said it correct, but the Rural Thai's don't know anything about Fried Chips (French Fries)...

At least he got his Lay's Crisps fried ................ ha ha ha ha

Thais know what a french fry is and I have eaten them in many remote places.

And no, many, if not most rural Thai's do not know and have never eaten Fries, Hamburgers, Pizza, Spaghetti. Asked do they have Fried Potato Crisps, they said yes the order came as Fried Lays Potato Crisps. To them, you got what you ordered. A special order from a foreigner.
