I agree you should never assault people on motorcycles. Its dangerous, also its dangerous to engage drunk people and give them foul language. After surviving the water you might have gotten a beating.

Like you I would make some remarks to foreigners first easier to explain things then with Thais (language skills and all)

To be fair I wouldn't have jumped off the bike to Thais, but on the other hand the Thais wouldn't have done that at that time of morning in CM.

It's a sort of unwritten law here in Phitsanulok (as it used to be in CM, but not sure about now) that water throwing stopped at dusk, which for me moving up from Pattaya and the mayhem, I thought it was brilliant. Works great, enjoy the water during the day and enjoy the evening/night/next morning socialising.

If that was me in the same situation, two days before Songkran officially starts, I think at a minimum "a serious mouthful of slightly uncouth language" would indeed be in order.

Would also have to say that these guys would have to be tourists, probably up there just for Songkran, the sooner that it is explained to them that they shouldn't be throwing water at motorbikes, in the dark during a normal day the better.

coffee1.gif Exactly!

Some years ago there was an incident in Pattaya with two elderly (in their 60's) Greek tourists...man and his wife who were there during Songkran "celebrations" in Pattaya.

They were there with their family..including their grandchildren.

Two of the normal Pattaya walking brain-damage cases...farangs they were...used a high pressure hose to knock the elderly lady off her feet and send her sprawling.

And then every time she tried to get back up, they knocked her down again.

Naturally, her husband...also in his 60's...tried to help her. So he got knocked down also.

Their son then interveined...actually throwing one of them off the trunk where they had the high-pressure hose mounted and knocking another one down. He was soon overpowered.

That elderly couple was not "celebrating" Songkran...they merely were attempting to cross the road from their hotel to a nearby resturant to join their family.

Their granddaughter got the whole episode on video.

The people who used the hose used the excuse that it was a "Thai tradition:.

In case you missed it above....they were farangs...not Thai.

The video was posted on the internet in Greece...and for a few months the Greeks were warned not to ever go to Pattaya...especially in Songkran.

Another glorious sucess for the boozers-and-losers brigade in Pattaya.

I would have turned the bike round and drove at them at full speed. Either that or get off the motorbike and square up to them face to face. I am (sort of) looking forward to Songkran this year with my friends but I seriously won't have any patience or tolerance for idiot farang tourists being stupid and putting other people in danger. If I see it happening, I'll be sure to speak my mind about it.

I think my angry ginger side is shining through. *punches people*

I was told by our local coppers last night the the 6PM shut off time every day is going to be strictly "enforced" this year across the country and infringers will be "punished".

I thought at the time "yeah right" and then just read this....

yes but 12.45 was already the next day

Once the sun goes down on Samui (Lamai) then people just stop (for the most part). I did see an event last year where a seriously huge Danish fella launched half a bin full of water at someone on a motorbike mid evening. Poor rider lost control and crashed into a fence, he looked back in disgust then drove off. Imagine he had hit a wall or a group of people. I wish people would put more thought into their actions

These idiots need hanging.

This will be my first time in a tourist spot (patong beach). I hope I don't get to see anything like above.

Blasting someone with water on a motorcycle is out of line! Could have been very bad for you!

The unwritten law works very well in Koh Chang too.

Only drunk foreigners can throw water in the night at motorbike riders...They deserve all the worst expletives IMOneus.gif

There was a particular four letter word which was used liberally, it has a certain international appeal.

Unfortunately Thaepae Gate is a Ladyboy hot-spot and when they heard me shouting the F word a few times a queue formed, with them saying "Okay I can do ".

Unintended consequences annoyed.gif

I would of paid the ladyboys to pin the idiots down and give them a surprise with a water gun. ohmy.png

They wouldn't do it again and it would make you smile everytime you saw someone walking funny.

Exactly so don't come moaning

and everyone recommend not to ride during Songkran anyway

As I read the OP he had been out with friends for an evening meal and was returning home when a clump of seriously stupid people threw water at him at 12:45 am.

Would they have been laughing if he had come off his bike and ended up under a truck or SUV?

Would you have laughed if he had.

I also ride a bike and I would have done the same at that time of night, but I don't ride during the day at Songkran.

I have seen too many bike accidents at Songkran with water and I have more respect for bikers whether Thai or Farang to throw water at them, usually I let them get close and squirt at their legs or if they are covered with powder etc I help them clean off.

Hey I think you're on to something here.......maybe I should go out and hire some Ladyboy bodyguards. We all know they can fight like demons when provoked but I think I'm quite keen on the idea of hearing them say to these idiots......" I have a pistol. and I know how to use it ".

Side tracking slightly, I was served at dinner by a 186cm tall Ladyboy last night, my gf is the restaurant manager at the restaurant I was at so I was introduced to everyone on the staff. I'm 180 tall, and I had to look up to shake her hand, ( made worse by the fact she was wearing 4 inch heels )......then she said....." Hello, I am Nye, I am Ladyboy ".

I think I would have sussed it out myself to be fair drunk.gif

In the evenings, down here in Bangkok anyway, it is understood that the water games stop- a combination of people coming home from work and the sun going down making things cold. The only exception is in areas well-understood to be nightlife/entertainment zones (even INSIDE some of the clubs)... I would have been very angry, too, and this is another example of how foreigners who don't know what they're doing here give us a bad name.
