Burmese President Thein Sein has been named one of the 100 most influential people in the world by TIME magazine. In its latest issue, TIME calls the former general “the architect of one of the most unlikely democratic transitions anywhere in the world.†Writing for the magazine, historian and author Thant Myint-U says that Thein Sein has had to balance the interests of the military, businessmen, the democratic opposition and civil society groups to undertake political and economic reforms, as well as push for an end to decades of ethnic conflict.
