Hi - does anyone know or have any experience of double pricing on the railways in thailand..

Reason behind this is that i got a ticket from hua lampong to bang khen last night and was charged 10 baht for a 3rd class ticket - i know not alot - but i saw somewhere before that the fare from don muang to hua lampong was 5 baht. So i thought 10 baht for a shorter journey was a bit steep.

As it was late last night there was only 1 counter open in the station and i was the only farang around and spoke in thai

Of course there could be several genuine reasons for this :

* My Don Muang - bkk price is out of date

* Travelling inward is chaper than outward

Be interested to know as i wondered if the english counter tickets were more expensive than other counters. Aslo what i dont get is that on the english language timetable to travel from hua lampong to asoke station is 2 baht and to hua mak is 3 baht. Doesnt seem to add up...

Just as an extra note it is well worth while getting both the english and thai language time tables from the information kiosk at hua lampong - the thai language timetables have alot more detail on them and seem to specify all the stops that a train makes whereas the english only dont have this.

The SRT website (English version) confirms your Hua Lampong - Don Muang price (5 Baht), but no intermediate stations are listed :o

http://www.railway.co.th/Eng/

Unfortunately the Thai language site is a totally different layout so I can't find the Thai price list (I don't read Thai well enough and the missus has gone to mums for the day), something called 'ticketprice.html' is marked a 'new' so there may be updated info.

That said I've never encountered anything remotely like dual pricing on SRT.

The 3rd-class train fare is indeed five baht from Don Muang to town (Hualumphong) and vice-versa. However, there is also a five baht surcharge levied if the train traveled happens to be a rapid train or an express train, thereby making the total ticket cost ten baht. This surcharge is a little bogus considering the rapid and express trains generally make all the same stops south of Don Muang, making the journey on either train no shorter than on a five-baht ordinary train.

Thanks all - this explains why - after being here for a while i'd like to know when i am paying more than the locals - but found it hard to beleive on the railways... My suspicions have been quelled...

OMG! are you serious? You were charged the outrageous amount of 10 baht for a trip that should have been 5? I can take no more of this punishment being dished out to farangs. LOL

This same OUTRAGEOUS 5 baht overcharge is also applied to the Baht Bus we use in Pattaya! Thai people pay 5 baht and Farangs pay 10 baht!

I think I'll write a letter to TAT and complain, figure that I have been overcharged a total of at least - 2 whole dollars in the last year!

Of course my back home transportation rates for the same trips would probably be over $100, however, I won't bring that up in my letter to TAT.

I'll get even when I am back home, if a Thai person wants to buy something from me - I will charge him double the price! That'll show 'em!

monochaser - i did say it isnt alot - 5 baht here or there is nothing - its not the amount it is the principle after being here for a while i like to know if i'm getting a fair proce or not - and as i'm likely to be using the trains in the future it was a suspicion i had and needed to find out...

Ovenman - thanks for the good info - with the special express/sprinter trains there is a 15 baht surcharge then ?

Probably not a 15 baht surcharge. The sprinters are all air-con second class so the fare itself should be different than the five baht third-class fare.

I always hand a 5 baht coin to the driver, never had problems, why do give a 10 baht coin :o

If it is the principle, then what is your opinion on Cambodian people being able to look at Nakorn Wat, er Angkor Wat for free, whereas foreigners have to pay I think it is $50 USD?

:o:D:D

Regarding the baht buses, not sure why you choose to pay more on the baht buses; if you want to pay 10 baht you can, but the driver is perfectly happy receiving 5 baht. YOu can even pay them 20 baht or 100 baht if you want to. Then again, so many foreigners love to throw cash around on pointless stuff here, I guess I should not be interfering with that hobby :D
