EU lifts chicken import ban for Thailand

The Nation

BANGKOK: -- The European Union will terminate the 6-year import ban on fresh chicken and eggs from Thailand, starting from July 1.

The Department of Trade Negotiations is bullish on the outlook as the export will resume for the first time since January 23, 2004 when bird flu outbreak emerged in Thailand.

Srirat Rastapana, director-general of the department, said that the export of salted fresh chicken meat will resume under the EU’s quota, at 92,610 tonnes; and frozen chicken at 5,100 tonnes. Exports under the quota will be subjected to 0-15.4 per cent tariffs, against 93-512 per cent imposed on non-quota portion.

"The ministry will rush on reopening the markets in Japan and South Korea, which were our major chicken importers. Both imposed the import ban in 2004," she said.

The new EU rules which have been in place since January are the reason for this. Standards in Thailand on keeping poultry are, I would have thought, well below those of Eu members. It's just a way round the rules, the poultry from Thailand can be used in proccessed meals as they don't have to abide by the same rules on animal wellfare and the price a UK farmer would get for his poultry which would be sold proccessed is very low.

I heard that in the UK chickens qualify for a housing allowance, job seekers allowance, carers' allowance and dependents' allowance, have an inflation adjusted pension, a government sponsored QUANGO and a representative in the the house of commons.

Can that really be true?

I read about this. Bad news. Tere goes the 39 baht a kilo chicken -- flying away to the EU. Chicken will be back up to 100 baht a kilo by the end of July.
