Real long shot here i suppose, but on behalf of a friend, does anyone have an idea who painted this, and/or the painting name?

Will try an art specific forum if no luck here, just hate registering on new places, so trying here first.

pity the image is so small, would help if we could see the insignia on the cap- at least give an idea of origin (sorry it doesn't look familiar but if the cap were say from the Union side of the Civil war then you could more easily google it)
