[Myanmar] State Media Issues Correction After Using Offensive Term

Two state-run Burmese newspapers, Kyemon and Myanmar Ahlin, have issued corrections after coming under fire for referring to Muslims as “kalar,†a term generally regarded as derogatory, in reports about  a series of violent incidents in Arakan State. The corrections were issued after Ye Htut, the director general of the government’s Information and Public Relation Department, was criticized on Facebook after earlier urging non-state media to avoid using the term “communal conflict†to describe the killing of 10 Muslims by an angry mob on Sunday. The term was also removed from the Ministry of Information website.
