Drive runoff out to sea quickly: water adviser

BANGKOK: -- A key strategist for the government's water management team called on state agencies yesterday to drive runoff water into the sea promptly.

"Do it before the hightide period begins late next month or early August," Hydro and Agro Infomatics Institute (HAII) director Royol Jitdon said yesterday.

He said rain and storms were likely to continue from Thursday without any real break.

"We believe the rainfall this year will be around 1,500 millimetres. The volume of water will be huge even though it should be lower than last year's figure," he said.

Last year, there was about 1,800 millimetres of rain and the country suffered its worst floods in decades. Hundreds of people died and seven industrial estates were inundated. Don Mueang Airport in Bangkok was also forced to shut because floodwater swamped its runway.

This year, relevant authorities have been anxious to manage the wet season downpours better.

However, the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department has already declared three floodaffected provinces as disasterhit zones. They are Surat Thani, Sukhothai and Phitsanulok.

At the worsthit spots in Surat Thani, the water level has now risen well above one metre.

The Meteorological Department also warned that 10 other provinces were at risk of flash floods, as heavy downpours were expected over the next few days. These were Nong Khai, Beung Kan, Nakhon Phanom, Sakon Nakhon, Mukdahan, Amnat Chareon, Ubon Ratchathani, Trat, Ranong and Phang Nga.

Royol warned that construction of embankments was likely to affect watermanagement plans already laid down. He pointed out that the water level in Pathum Thani might have hit 2.8 metres last year but embankments along rivers in nearby provinces could push the level to 3.5 metres if there was flooding this year.

"And if an embankment bursts, things will become even more serious," Royol said.

Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) spokesman Wasan Meewong said preparations were being made to ensure efficient water drainage.

"Bangkok Governor MR Sukhumbhand Paribratra has already instructed the dredging of canals and drainage pipes in 18 districts," he said.

Wasan said city officials would launch a website to provide people in the capital with updated details on the water situation via www.floodwatch.bangkok.go.th.

3.5 metre high flood waters? Serious stuff blink.png

They better get their act together rapid style.........if the factories flood again this year there will be hell to pay.

Get Minister Plopadop to deploy his little tug boats immediately..

Imagine how bad the flooding would have been without this piece of ingenuity.

I wonder how this project is coming along since it was supposed to be completed by the rainy season. whistling.gif

Now, I wish to know how much those guys are paid to state such an obvious thing............

Silly me, I thought it was the other round and we had to send the water back up north to keep it in lakes.....

I know, if we get this water out from the land fast enough, then it won't stay around to build up...

GENIUS!

Absolute Genius!

Give the man a medal!

I asked the question some time ago about Yingluck's promise of "no more floods" ... which was "based upon what exactly?"

They have consistently repeated nonsensical rhetoric about the reasons for last year's floods, whilst doing precious little to prevent the coming bout!

There are going to be some very unhappy people upcountry, particularly those who are likely to be hit for the second year in succession......

Based on what?

Based on that the people like to hear that shortly after the floods. I guess she didn't know that she can stay so long in the office when she first told it.

Whatever happened to......

The hundreds of billions set aside?

The massive water highway?

The tunnels?

The roads that would have a secondary use as floodways?

I have extensive experience in water management. I managed 1 to live 1 month from cans, pumping the water out of my company, having a bucket to sh*t only and plastic bags to story it sick.gif . Had to check everything every hour day and night.....couldn't sleep proper the next 3 month.

And worst I had to drink crap Thai beer instead of import wine.

At the end my company survived and lost just 2 month turnover and someone picked up my backyard full of plastic bags surrounded by flies big like eagles.

While I don't like corruption the outlook that I'll have another month like this makes me really feel negative to this government of clown that aren't doing anything.

if yingluk says there will be no problem from flooding this year, does that mean she doesnt need to have emergency plans, resource reserves, cash for victims?

Your survival story moved me, especially when I read about you having to forgo the imported wine. whistling.gif

Your tale of woe reminded me of pictures I saw last year of thousands of Thais having to do much the same thing as you to protect their businesses, families and homes. We were also victims of the floods in the lower north on the Nan river.

Most people inconvenienced by the 2011 floods lost a lot of sleep but thank heavens they were still able to buy (with perhaps a degree of difficulty), "crap Thai beer".

As for the cleanup, given the right incentive and due respect, Thais will take shit from anybody.

But, have faith, this year the water management is in good hands from the very get go.post-9891-0-41088100-1340185142_thumb.jp
