Contaminated Food May Have Killed Canadian Sisters: Phi Phi Island

Is it just me, or were they trying to imply that Ibuprofin (Advil) was some sort of exotic and dangerous drug?

Yes they are.....and as this goes on expect more like this from Thailand's finest...instead of being a professional police force and just issuing a statement which says they are investigating the case and will release more factual information as it becomes availble....Thailands finest have this ability of talking through their bottoms all the time and actaully showing people they havent got a a clue what their talking about.... keystone cops 2012

Dear Thai Visa news editor.

Following is the email alert that I received from TV of a breaking news article:

" Koh Phi Phi: Magic mushrooms, contaminated food may have killed Canadian sisters; Thailand Live Tuesday

I am interested in the magic mushrooms comment..... and am not available to find it in the news article anywhere. Can you tell us where the link is from. Its the first I have heard of it.

My apologies....... I found magic mushrooms in the last para of the 2nd article.....

How much do you want to bet that the forensic teams blame it on the ibuprofen? That's the easiest way to get out of this and save face.....

Methanol poisoning

Why only two victims then ?

1. We have a serial killer

2. People eating puffer fish

3. rat poison

4. Arsenic

etc etc etc....

If any family members are reading some of the drivel posted on this subject.....it must be really causing them distress

I beleive the only conclusion that can be stated with any certain fact is that thai officials will attempt to cover up exactly what happend if it paints Thailand in a bad light and affects their "tourism"

The contaminated food theory doesn't hold very well if you consider that only these 2 got sick.

Just two people died .

Just like in the Chiangmai incident, we don't know how many others may have gotten sick, or where, then recovered and failed to report it. And, if other victims where Thai, we might not hear of it at all.

all the speculation and reports are worthless, we all know the Thai's will try and cover it up. Without a proper autopsy in Canada the truth will never be known. As has been sated there would more than 2 fatalaties if we beleive the Thai's version so far.

the vomit was not restricted to an area, neither were feces...

it was all over the room and over them...

and when you are feeling worse and worse over hours, and no help available, then its only natural to take ibuprofen and the things you have with you...

do you have to die here, without doing anything to help yourself?

These things take time. You can't figure this out over night. Dr. Pornthep is a very good doc and will get to the bottom of it, hopefully.

But out of respect to the families, please show some respect on this thread. wai.gif

They should insist on a foreign autopsy. Pornthip will provide whatever answer protects Thai tourism the best.

Incorrect! she has stood up to many a Thai establishment in her time and is highly respected!

This is in reply to " They should insist on a foreign autopsy. Pornthip will provide whatever answer protects Thai tourism the best."

Answers please.......just answers. This is a diabolical torture for their families, get the pathologists in and find out, now. Fly in Canadian pathologists to assist.

We can do without conspiracy theories, just answers.

Please.

I agree! Stop the Thai bullshi?, stalling and get the answers, from professionals. As usual, the Canadian Embassy people are useless in matters like this.

a "real poison" seems likely...

they saw each other dieing and when you see your sister with blood on her lips, you will make it out of the room, no matter what... except you are wholly unable...like that:

The second stage of the intoxication is increasing paralysis. Many victims are unable to move; even sitting may be difficult. There is increasing respiratory distress. Speech is affected,

same source:

the victim, although completely paralyzed, may be conscious and in some cases completely lucid until shortly before death

According to the Doctor who arrived on the scene, the vomit was NOT as reported all over the room, it was in a wastepaper bin.

That is a completely unqualified and unjust comment. By all accounts the Canadian Consulate have been instrumental in making sure the bodies remain untouched until such time as the girls parents get here and determine what they wish to do.

NO, thats not true.

a lot of vomit was found in a wastepaper bin, but it didnt say, it was only found there...

almost all sources say, it was all over the room and over the girls...

if you insist otherwise, give your source.

Wow all the barstool pathologists, statisticians and political analysts are out in force here at the ThaiVisa court of last resort. All they need is some knitting needles and a bench from which to pronounce judgment.

And the important thing, above all else, is the "the Image" of the country. The reality of lawlessness and shortcuts for profit are completely irrelevant...

What an ass clown. As usual, they are trying to blame it on the victims. I have had severe food poisoning before in Thailand, and did not come anywhere near the horrific condition of these girls. They are trying to sweep it under the rug, and imply that the victims were at fault. Oh, not possible that it's food poisoning? Well, perhaps it was the ibuprofen found in their room, that will do it every time, especially if taken with a drink or two.

Do people "shroom" here in Thailand? Tripping on magic mushrooms is quite popular among kids in California, how about here in LOS?

"determine the cause of death, so local people and foreign countries would have fewer concerns."

Does this not ring of a foregone conclusion? It certainly rings of a foregone purpose.

Normally, determining cause of death is to assign culpability where it exists and to prevent other deaths.

This statement sounds more like PR spin, to which the details must conform.

In Australia we've had some deaths recently, one just a couple of weeks back, from consumption of Death Cap mushrooms. Chinese are common victims. I've looked into this and found that death comes days after consumption and proceeds obvious serious illness. The victims actually fall ill and then experience a slight recovery before organ failure kicks in a few days later.

Wiyada Srirangkul, director of the Tourism Authority Krabi office, said tourism in the province did not appear to have been affected by the incident because the cause of death was still not known.

However, if it were found that the young women died because of contaminated food, the image of the area would inevitably be affected.

Two people are dead and somehow this is seen as somehow relevant. Just goes to show where the government's priorities and mindsets are. annoyed.gif

Who wants to bet that whole thing will be shown to be the "forang's fault"

Why even Canada, the deceased could just easliy flown to somewhere like Singapore and get an impartial autopsy performed...

I think it's about time, Thai authorities look into, what kind of chemicals are used to spray hotel rooms to get rid of bugs and rats.

This story sounds like the one from Chiang Mai, i hardly think you crap/vomit yourself to death from a mix of brufen and vodkashots, I guess it would also take a rather nasty Tom Yum Goong, to do the same blink.png

Good that the bodies, has not been removed from the room, but someone should lockdown the whole hotel - so that no chemicals stored there goes "missing". Also the booze from the bar they frequented, should be locked down until the source of their death is found...

There are a lot of backpackers in Moo Ban Phi Phi....if someone would offer "Magic Mushroom Buckets" it would be a big seller, i guess. But isn't it more of a Laos/Cambodian thing? When I'm on Phi Phi, i avoid Moo Ban Phi Phi, as it is a shithole.....full of Backpackers, so i wouldn't know - they definitely don't serve them at Zeavola Resort where I normally stay.

Seriously, they are trying to imply the girls got what they deserved by ordering something to get them high. They pretty much suck as they apparently have nothing to back that up from a forensic stand point. Maybe I am reading it wrong, by implying they took drugs without any further proof is more spin and deflection. I wonder if their discussion focus more on what story sounds the best as opposed to what can we do to stop this from happening again.

That coupled with they should not drink taking motrin and anti inflamatories just rubs me wrong

Agree totally, and as that was the 1st step in the police's investigation of the Norwegian and US gilr two years back ---- lets theroize drugs, with no proof whatsoever - one needs to take this with 2 grains of salt. Until more evidence most likely a deflection.

I agree. Pornthip shot herself in the feet, hands and head at the same time when she did the bidding of the Thai " generals" and claimed the GT 2000 magical bomb detector worked great.... So to add her into the mix will just add a nice farcical touch to this tragic affair... The only way this will be resolved is to get the bodies to Canada for a full autopsy. If the Thai authorities know this, they will not do their own mickey mouse autopsy and publish false results favorable to their tourist image. Since this would be overturned by the real autopsy done in Canada. The skill and expertise of the Thai forensics dept was put on full display in the case of the 7 people who died in Chiang Mai. And they came up with................nothing......

Apart from being a bloke, Dr. Pornthep mentioned in the OP is different from Dr. Pornthip of the GT 200 fame.

Think it very odd that just the two sister should fall victim to food or drink poisoning, Unless maybe it was deliberate. But I do agree that they should bring in an impartial expert to do and autopsy and investigate. Even if it is to be seen by all that the authorities do care and want the truth. I feel very sorry for the family who have lost two children, hope you get the answers you need.

I have heard its quite popular on the islands, not sure what kind of mushrooms they are though. Psilocybn mushrooms are safe to eat in any quantity (physically, maybe not mentally) but there are other kinds which can be hallucinogenic that contain poison and are dangerous such as amanita muscaria and others.

So let me get this straight. If the cause of death was contaminated food, the image of the area would be affected. If it works out to be murder it is fine as murders happen pretty often and the police will arrest always a sucker after being given a deadline by a politician? How about the 4 cases in 1999? No solved either... didn't that affect the area?
