Everyone is entitled to their opinion, fair enough .Lisa has simply posted her opinion of her experiences on Samui as have some of the other posters on previous threads albeit being positive or negative. Wherever you go in the world we will face situations that do not meet our personal approval or suit us. If the thread does not suit some people do not read it. It never seems to amaze me some of the comments made by some of the ardent posters , that just like to post anything just for the sake of posting and increasing the # of their posts.

Never seems to amaze me the number of experts on Samui ,the failed business entrepreneurs ,the ones that a Samui sight seeing trip is how many bars they can visit during their stay , the island services not up to their own countries standards , forced to come & live here most of the time not by choice ,the ones that have to change the world & are probably a failure in their own country to them nothing is perfect till it suits their particular end , just ###### whiners ,the glass always half empty never half full.

The other amazing thing is these posters have never even set foot on Samui or KP, but they cotton on a thread & they are instant experts.

Sometimes one wonders what their real agenda is ,they are generally not just bagging Samui , KP or other destinations, but indirectly the Thai way of life & the Thai culture.

No one takes away the fact that Samui & Thailand have their peculiarities & certain ways of doing things. It is my choice if I like it or not, but it DOES NOT give me the right to bag it to a point of an obsession , if it does not suit me in a particular area I just leave.

Tolerance & adaptability are key factors.

I just hope people start to think a little better, before formulating replies ( myself included lol sorry Tax a troll for a troll ) & maybe I am expecting too much of senior ops & moderators to show a little more respect to newbie’s.

Off my chest, have a great day , awaiting the bagging with baited breath.

:o

The thread was compiled of people saying what they loved about the island, not saying that it's better than this destination or that destination and also, this time, not saying what they dislike about it: there are plenty of other threads for that.

Surely a worthwhile exercise, no?

Perhaps if Post #5 was the OP, then yes... a one-sided exercise in eyeglass rose-tinting might be worthwhile.

Perhaps we can agree on a balance between rose tinted specs and jet black shades then.

Actually I like to wear clear glasses without tint of any kind.

I'm no optician but this could mean you need your eyes tested.

my opinions on samui (aka devils island) are well known.

i have been vitriolic and abusive at times about samui , but i stand by everything i have said about the place.

we went to settle there and found that things are not as they seem on the surface , and beneath the pretty and seductive surface layer their exists a nasty undercurrent of greed and dishonesty , and that in general , foriegners and even thais from outside the island are discriminated against.

we concluded that samui was best for a vacation in one of many first rate resorts there , but as a place to live long term it is an awful place , and apart from beach and bar life , there is little there.

i have been in thailand for many years and in spite of my ranting posts i am not some bitter and twisted old yorkshireman who likes nothing better than to complain and bitch about everything , but samui is not a nice place , the bad is slowly devouring the good there and if you are able to gain the confidences of some of the locals there and speak to them in their own language and listen to the stories they tell and listen to the fears they have for the future and the future of their children in the atmosphere of greed and dishonesty that exists there and the helplessness they feel about it then you might understand my views on the place.

if you just visit the place for vacations or extended stays and either have no wish to , or because you dont speak the language are unable to get to know and forge proper friendships with thais there , and i dont just mean the frienships that all tourists and long stayers strike up with local business people, the landlords and the shopkeepers etc. then you are unlikely to uncover the real heartbeat , the zeitgeist of what makes samui tick and the direction it is moving in.

i find it strange that those that live there are so sensitive to any criticism about the place and feel the need to blather on about sunday roasts , dancing the night away and mango lassis as if that is all one needs to have a fulfilled life. it just confirms yet again that many (not all) the foriegn residents there really do walk around with their eyes closed and that samui is becoming the destination of choice for some rather sad and shallow people.

I'll do a bit of homework and see if I can find out who he/she really is/was... :o

Do a bit of homework? Are you allowed to misuse your position for personal gain? :D

I think this thread should be closed, let's just go back to whinging posts - much more productive!

I do respect them and I do hope that you receive the help that your behavior indicates that you need.

Which behaviour might that be? Come on John, let's be a little mature now. This isn't the forum for petty squabbling. I would be more than happy to discuss this further with you privately but I don't think you should be trying to win points with your friends in the open forum.

Well you kids have once again managed to ruin a perfectly nice (bit cheesy) thread, take it elsewhere why dont you and let the Samui appreciation club continue in peace!

Yeah... well and truly strayed from the purpose of this thread.

It started off so civilised too....

To summarise;- Yes, Samui, like any other place in Thailand (or the world for that matter) has good and bad points.

There are other places in Thailand where I've lived that have been more enjoyable and less enjoyable.

With its faults, I still enjoy myself whenever I'm in Samui.

There are obviously certain parts of the island that I prefer to other parts - everyone has their preferences.

It may not be paradise but it certainly isn't the 'hel_l' that some people have labelled it.

Yes, I also am disappointed that this thread has deteriorated into the opposite of what it was intended!

Why didn't the negative posters just start their own topic called something like..."Samui - it's crap!" Then people like me could just choose to ignore it. I'm back in Samui in April and I can hardly wait, I love the place, the people, the culture, the food, the beaches. I could go on but I wouldn't want to be accused of being cheesy!
