Why Are There Proportionately So Many More Brits Than Americans In Thailand?

I reckon because in America if you get fed up with where you are then you can move to another state and it's like being in a completely different country but with all the advantages of a common language and currency.

Whereas everywhere is the same in England and although we have freedom of movement throughout the EU they talk funny and have a worthless currency.

So we Brits tend to move overseas but you Yanks tend to move within USA.

From my experience living in the UK, you could move 20 miles and feel like you were in another country ,,, at least from a language point of view.

Not even that far. Dialect can change from village to village,

Eh yup, tharse rite tha noes by eck.

Nah, wers me whippet, me shirt and me pants, eyes gannin oot.

There's also the fact that the American media portrays the rest of the World as being full of murderous Islamists, disease ridden tropics, biblical starvation and failed socialist states.

If I was American I would stay at home too. coffee1.gif

I'm not sure pointing out the truth to Americans has as much of an effect as you do ! ..... I think you are giving them way to much credit

I love the fact that people are having a pop at the UK, trying to get a reaction and the other country what is it? oh yes America. If we gave a <deleted> we wouldn't be on this forum or shacked up in Thailand :-) :-)

Brits can take a lot more flak IMO than the yanks, we are thicker skinned and insults are like water of a ducks back, some of us don't give a flying duck and sure don't go crying to mummy when called nasty names. Most Canadians I've met have a similar sense of humour to Brits and enjoy and can handle a good drink. Most yanks I've met are pis*sed at the smell of the bar mans apron.

Let battle commence.blink.png

As for Canadian women I've sampled them and are far better IMO than American women.

I'm a yank and with a canadian woman we were caught having it off by folks in a canoe on Takla Lake near Fort St James in BC in 1971 when we thought that we were alone...she giggled and I giggled and it was a wonderful time...later we bbqed some chicken on an open fire and had then had it off on the lakeshore in the moonlight...we were nekkid, shameless and briefly in love...a veritable garden of eden it was...

Most Americans only travel abroad in a uniform.

1421.jpg

My gosh, are you that jealous? To repeat 61.5 million non military trips outside of the US. Not only are you a little wrong but 61.5 million times wrong.

70 million UK residents go abroad each year, The UK has what about 1/3 of the population of the USA.

How would you know? When was the last time you were in the USA for a period of time to allow you to draw such a conclusion? This is about as ignorant as the rest of the neanderthal-like statements made in this thread.

I was about to say the only thing missing from this thread was to drag the Mussies into it, so there goes that idea.

Nobody wants to speak ill of the dam_n Brits. People beat down the Americans (US) all the time. The "other" North Americans never even get a mention.

Alaskaians?

People seem to think most of the Farang in Thailand are a pretty lousy bunch of people ..... at least that's what they say most of the times on this website. So maybe their are proportionaly more Brits like that than Americans ?

To be fair, we Brits know there is a rough bunch of our countrymen in Thailand, there's no point denying it. Equally there are many outstanding people, many of whom have done their time and are enjoying their sunset years in the Sunshine.

Before the Americans gang up on me, I worked with the US forces for 5 years in Germany, and it was the best 5 years of my life. wai.gif

Not wishing to sidetrack but I've never met an Australian in Thailand who didn't have a Passport. So, they must own a lot of Passports.

But since we are talking about the Brits ... why does there appear to be so many wee Bonny Lads (Scots) interested in Thailand?

Only about 20% of Americans even have a passport.......................

30 percent now.

that's only because they are in a rush to get out of the country and renounce their citizenship coffee1.gif

Enough trolling ok?

Hey ... speaking of that fine dress tradition ... is that where you guys get the long white socks, but then go all native and combine them with the sandals?

Playing nicely? I'm glad to see treating Americans as the whipping boy is playing nicely smile.png

Honestly I believe the answer is simply lack of vacation time. I've heard two weeks mentioned a few times, but if you are any sort of professional you can't actually be gone for two weeks. If you are a blue collar worker you don't get paid if you are gone. So for either group being gone more then 3 or 4 days is generally not possible.

Don't you get holiday pay in the US?

^^ It's Winter here in Australia and have (ashamedly) put on a 'Winter Coat' ... as you can see in my Avatar.

I put that down to eating a little more then usual and not exercising enough because I'm indoors more.

Isn't that the reason people get fatter?

OH ... someone else just posted ... this is in reply to JT's comment above.

It is common in the US for people to not even take their small amount of vacation time. Especially in such a bad economy where so many people feel no job security. Yes vacation days are generally paid for people with full time jobs. A huge percentage of Americans who are working do not actually have official full time jobs. Part time jobs and contract jobs are very common. Visionaries like Arthur Frommer have been fighting for decades for the USA to adopt a more European style vacation day culture. In some ways, things have actually gone backwards.

Of course there are always many exceptions. Like teachers who get the summer off (but often need to find a summer job to survive). Also well compensated contract workers who can work on and off and take very long (unpaid) holidays. (Used to be me.)

I'm quite surprised that only full time workers get holiday pay.

It varies from work situation to situation. Government laws mandating paid holidays would be at the state level, if they exist at all, and would be very weak if they do exist. Unions would have rules but most people are not union workers. Obviously more elite level positions such as tenured professor would have good vacation perks. An early career regular job worker could expect one or two weeks. The culture about vacations is very severe. For most Americans, a month off per year is an impossible dream and viewed negatively as European decadence. American exceptionalism -- the DARK side. Edited by Jingthing

I wouldn't say their are a "lot" of reasons for obesity , their are a handfull of reasons other than the overwhelming reason for the overwhelming number of people .... they simply eat to much , and that reason is far and away the main cause rather than a thiroid condition or other medical reasons.

a girl engineer in CA that I worked with went on holiday with her husband and spent USD15000 in two weeks in Oz and New Zealand...and I said that's a lot of dough to spend for a holiday and she just said 'work hard, play hard...' and I Iiked her a lot but she was crazy...
