AIS/12CALL 3G/H/H+ is now working in Samui

Getting anywhere up to 2.5 mb/s download and up to 1 mb/s upload as of yesterday.

Tested from various locations: Tesco/Lotus Chaweng / Near Chaweng Beach etc.

IT is a bit inconsistent but I assume they are in the process of rolling it out...

I get 3G symbol on iPhone 4S and h / h+ on Samsung Galaxy

Have a 3G/H+ symbol on the phone but only getting 245 kbps down and 244 up :(

231 ms ping.

Also, it does change to Edge a lot.

It might be helpful to all of us, that people reporting on this, might mention from which area, they are getting a good signal.... as did the OP....

..... just a suggestion! wink.png

you're looking at the wrong section you want 3G packages wich are quite a rip off, gprs 20 hours is 100 baht , you can download an average of 85 meg per hour wich would equal to 1.7 gig in 20 hours BUT the 3G package is 99 baht for 75MB.

so 3G in here is useless prices :

Some packages limit you to 384kbps.

You can get 5GB 3G / unlimited Edge / drops to 384k after 3G allowance runs out.

Interestingly my iPhone 4S drops to Edge quite frequently, my Galaxy S3 maintains an H or H+ connection pretty much continuously...

On the iPhone turning 3G on and off in settings kicks it back into 3G from Edge! I'd imagine flipping Airplane mode would do the same.

These are early days though so I'd imagine they're still ironing out the kinks.

@motocrosser

I call 1175 on my AIS phone.

Then press 2 (for english or other languages) then 1 (for english) - then 0 to talk to someone.

Tell them you want the 899Baht monthly package (for unlimited internet 5GB 3G) and make sure you have at least that + 7% tax in your phone, say 1000baht and they will set it up for you immediately.

I usually make sure I have 1000 baht or more in there at all times so when it renews there is no problem. Otherwise it doesn't renew and you have to go through the same procedure again.

If you have the sim in an iPad, then I guess you can't call direct so... borrow someone else's iPhone and put your micro-sim in it to do this, takes 5 minutes... then replace the micro-sim in the iPad and you're good to go.

writing this from samsung tablet. went to tesco lotus chaweng tuesday and we bought 5gb for 1120 bath incl simcard at a shop next to a japanese restaurant in tesco lotusvcenter. think there was a bowling alley opposite the shop too. coverage here at chaweng beach is ok but it does stop to work from time to time. seems like it goes down for a few minutes once in a while. no problems with card or anything, the staff up there activated the card and when got back to hotel we jusr insert simcard and internet was up and running. and now we can sit and watch the bad weather in our own country :-)

This is good news for me! Already have AIS on my current phone and DTAC doesn't cover my area. Just got back from traveling and bought a smart phone while away. Was thinking of going to True as AIS 3G wasn't an option when I last checked. Some questions, and please forgive my lack of telecommunications savvy:

With my current post paid plan, can I sign up for 3g with the call center?

Will I need a new SIM card (I assume that this will be the case, so does signing up with the call center do me any good?)

Any problem getting my contact list (stored in their system) downloaded into my new phone?

Any recommendations for a best plan based on their options? I plan to not use GPS (it's an island!) and to mostly use the internet access as a back up when the TOT line isn't working. However, I know these things are addictive and the temptation to Google things will overcome thrift whistling.gif I usually find it better to get a larger kind of a plan rather than pay a penalty for going over the smaller plan.

Thanks for any helpful replies.

True has the best ( ref: NBTC recent trials ) & largest network nationwide for 3G.

True is not that good in Samui, lots of dead spots even with Edge:( I know, I have a True sim which works well in some places and is totally useless in others)

AIS Prepay is 799 Baht for 3GB, 899 Baht for 5GB at 3G/H/H+ speeds.

I will do that. Was not sure about the '1,000 baht in account' as I use post paid. Thanks for the reply.

You drawing a conclusion on a 3G network based on a 2G experience. Never been to Samui, but would bet better coverage on 3G than 2G, simply cause of better propagation of 850 MHz over 1800 MHz

True entered the 2G market with a suppressed ARPU 15 years after the competition and a limited life concession due to expire next year.... Not a great scenario for investment.

They definitely are the leader ( ref recent NBTC benchmark tests ) in 3G. I travelled last Wed. Night from BKK to Hua Hin with " tunein radio" ( Internet radio - get oz radio stations ) and had un interrupted radio for the whole trip.......

Ummm... No I'm drawing my conclusions based on using a True sim on Samui for the last few months... not anywhere else... this thread is about Samui after all.

Although I have used AIS 3G in Phuket, Hat Yai and Bangkok an had pretty good results. Tried DTAC and True as well. But of course this is just my personal experience. YMMV.

I am getting the same here on the NE of the island. True just does not even connect at times. AIS always does and even shows 3G swapping in and out

Signing up with my already having a post paid account was quite easy by phone. English speaking staff quite helpful and (from my limited knowledge) seemed pretty knowledgeable. Was told my account would show prorated figure with full monthly amount starting next billing cycle; that I could terminate the 3G with no penalty; and that they would give me a new SIM card capable of holding more addresses at the main office (but I didn't need a new card to start service, my old one was fine). I had to figure out the settings on my phone to connect to the network, but that was also fairly easy. And yes, I do have GPRS wai.gif The GPS function is only on demand, so I will wait until I leave the island or manage to get lost here.
