For some time I've been a little embarrassed that Scotland's greatest sportsman is a tennis player; I feel it highlights a weakness in our core strengths that we don't fete the world's greatest curler, that we don't really have any footballers or rugby players that make our peers jealous.

But enough of such miserable celtic grizzling... Why does Bradley Wiggins get so little coverage, compoared to Andy Murray, when he is competing in the hardest, the most physical challenge of them all, the Tour de France?

I am not sure AM gets all the credit he deserves, just the hype around Wimbledon.

Now Bradley Wiggins in the greatest endurance and technical race of them all, he can sprint, time trial and climb mountains, his one little weakness, he can only ride cadence and not increase tempo like Froome, Schleck and Contadore or the other great high climbers.

To answer your question, I don't flamingwell know!!

But remember, David Millar of Sotland, Cavendish of England, Froome presently of indeterminate race and Wiggins have all won stages, and Roche of Ireland is in the top 10, not bad for the Isles.

Thats the Schleck thats just failed a dope test!!!

Wiggins is clearly a superb athlete but unfortunately in a sport thats name is being ruined by drug cheats. It also has limited attraction to television viewers.

Regards scottish sportsmen, i honestly feel the biggest problem up there is spending too much time concentraing on english failure and not enough time concentrating on winning something yourselves.

Nope! Andy is by far the greater high climber, Out of the tour with a broken collar bone at present. Frank, has failed the first test so has been withdrawn from the tour, he has challenged the second sample and then he has CAS to fall back.I will only condemn him if the second one contains a banned substance and then only after an investigation.

I don't think that hairdressing is considered a sport outside of Scotland... rolleyes.gif

Wiggins- born in Belgium

Froome- born in Kenya

And what's your point?

Are you saying being born on overseas service should render you ineligible to play for your country?

Absolutely not!!

but like Lawrenson, Aldridge, Cascarino, Grieg, the Nawab of Pataudi, Pietersen, Barnes, Kipketer, Budd

are they playing for themselves or for their country under a flag of convenience?

probably not a question for this thread, but I thought an interesting view in regard to Great British Sportsmen.

Daley Thompson is the greatest British sportsman of all time. Fact!

Granted he was great at what he did but many would argue that Steve Redgrave staying at the top for over 16 years, winning 5 consecutive olympic golds whilst being a diagnosed diabetic makes him the greatest ever.

Nope, Bobby Moore gets that accolade.........

We won the club in 64 beat Preston 3 to 2, with goals from Johnny Sissons, Ronnie Boyce and Geoff Hurst too and Bobby Moore he ran the show until the game was won, a Barking boy of 19 years, the king had just begun.

Cup Winners Cup in 65 to Wembley once again, his fine blonde hair was everywhere as Bobby ran the game, 2 goals from Alan Sealey brough the cup to E13, we drank a toast to all the boys and Bobby Moore the king.

Then in 1966 the country made the call, Sir Alfie rang Ron Greenwood, he said Ron I need them all, Ron said now don't greedy, I'll only give you 3, Moore, Hurst and Peters, get down to Wembley.

Now Martin Peters scored a goal and Geoffrey Hurst scored 3, Bobby was the captain when we beat West Germany, Bobby was the general, the leader of the team, when West Ham won the World Cup and England reigned supreme.

His memory will never fade, the greatest in the land, now Bobby Moore's in heaven, he sits at Gods right hand, the finest number 6, the world will ever see and that's how we'll remember him, Bobby Moore the king.

for me its got to be lester piggot for a man who lived on coffee, cigars and champagne weighed around 54kilo's had to steer a racing machine of around half a ton, who's record will never be equaled.if he had a gold medal for all the classics he won it would have been more than the uk's gold reserves.

How could you forget Robert Millar - a truly great athlete.

Yes a great British cyclist and brilliant climber.

Have you read any of the articles he's written on cyclingnews.com? Good reading.

Someone told me he had a sex change several years ago. Absolutely no idea if that is true or not.
