Chalerm denies knowledge of son's move

The Nation on Sunday

BANGKOK: -- Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yoobamrung said yesterday he disagreed with his son Duang, who has switched from the military to become a police officer.

Chalerm said if he had known his son's plan he would have stopped him, because a police officer has to move from place to place many times. And if the rival party became the government, his son would certainly be transferred to serve in the restive South.

Duang, meanwhile, said he had grown up, therefore his father had nothing to do with the move. However, he insisted he followed the process legally in switching from the Army to the Metropolitan Police Bureau.

Asked if he wanted to be a national athlete because he has expertise in shooting, Duang said he almost applied for national athlete selection for the latest SEA Games, but when the news spread, things became complicated so he changed his mind.

National Police chief Pol General Priewpan Damapong said on Friday that Duang would be an instructor at a pistol-shooting course for policemen because of his expertise in that. He admitted that the appointment was "hastened" but added that "given his capability and usefulness, his appointment is appropriate".

This story would be nothing if the reader doesn't do a Google search for the names in question. Makes all the difference! Is it any coincidence the Nation left out links or mentions of the past?

Anyone who knows anything about Thailand knows the names in question.

It was in the other English language paper that we are not allowed to quote from or link to.

A government without scruples.

A police force without scruples.

I think a guy with his record should not become a cop at all! But if he does, would his family name give him the privilege not to do his duty (even in the south) like so many others do? I would quit the job, serving in the south while the vice PM basically says: Yeah it's OK for you to die down there, but not for my son.

Shooting someone from a few feet away does not make anyone an expert.

His capacity & usefulness? Apart from keeping him off the street, any ideas?

Hastened & appropriate. By who & why?

There is not one word of truth in the statements of Chalerm & the police chief.

As a daddy I can understand the concern displayed by Dept. PM Pol. Captain Chalerm. Imagine your son coming to you and says "Dad, I will switch from Army to Police". With k. Chalerm knowing the good and the bad of his force, of course he disagrees whistling.gif

It does not take a real bight person to deduct that the boy is a loose cannon. He may have seen 'the hand writting on the wall', as far as his future in the army. The police force, under daddy's thumb sounds about right for him and his kind. Doubt if there any tears being shed at the decision??? of such a individual, by the army. There may have been some encourgement even.
