First Time Hiv Treatment In Bkk, Please Help!

Hi all,

I am just recently tested HIV positive, and plan to start seeking treatment in Bangkok. I am from Singapore. I have a few questions about the treatment process so that I can plan my trip in the most economical way.

I know that for the first treatment, it is not like you go there, doctor gives you a prescription, you take it to buy your medication and that’s it. There would be a lot of tests that they would ask you to do before deciding whether you should start a medication regime. So, what I concern is how long usually these blood tests take to release the result? If I take a one-week trip to BKK, can I go to meet the doctor and do the test on the first day, and then collect the result and meet the doctor again on the last day?

I plan to seek for a good doctor in Bumrungrad Hospital. But given my budget constraint, I would like to do my blood tests and purchase medication in Red Cross Thailand, not in the hospital. That brings the next question, how do I put it across to the doctor that I want to do the tests outside? Is it fine just to tell him/her straight?

Besides, does anyone know what specific procedures I should take, being a first-time in Bumrungrad Hospital for HIV treatment? How long should I schedule for my stay in BKK for the first treatment? I guess that for the second treatment onwards, I can just ask the doctor how long I need to be in BKK. But I really don’t have any idea about the first treatment.

Thank you very much for your advice in advance.

Sorry to hear this. Also, I am sorry that you are located in SG since SG government does not provide any subsidiary on HIV meds.

Why don't you contact one of the HIV agency in SG, like Action for AIDS, and ask them more about treatment option in BKK. I heard lots of people would fly to BKK to get the meds, no matter generic or official, as the treatment option is very expensive in SG. I met someone was working in Action for AIDS, so you are not the first one that want to have the treatement/medical testing/meds in BKK. So I guess they have lots of information and save you the money and time.

wish you luck.

if you were having everything done at Bumrungrad a week might suffice but for getting tests, meds etc at the Thai Red Cross I'd make it 2 weeks, or at least 10 days.

Hi all,

Thanks so much for your reply and info.

One more question please, if I want to make an appointment with a doctor, how early should I make it? Do I have to do it a month in advance, or just a few days would be enough?

Thanks.

a few days is usually enough, but if it is an unusually popular doctor and/or one with short hours maybe give it a week.
