I've consulted with a few, and have been mostly unimpressed with how thorough some of them are, and how willing they are to start cutting without even doing an MRI for something involving tissue. Also when I read forums like WEBMD about certain possible treatments, and ask if say injecting a steroid after a procedure would be valuable as I've seen that's sometimes done:

Responses without explanation simply laughter and a, "no." We do have agency as consumers, and I find it's a bit like lets cut you and get the insurance money rather than be diagnostically thorough. I've tried three private hospitals now and vetted specialists in the needed field.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I have only one experience with an orthopedist here in BKK, but it fits the picture you decribe. I had acute neck pains. He gets X-rays which do not show skeletal damage and then prescribes an anti-inflammatory and a muscle relaxant. No effort to identify the cause. So, I read up on the internet and find recommendations for changing sleep posture. Which I do and that relieves 95% of the pain.

Although I very much appreciate the low-cost of medical care here in Thailand, it seems to me that doctors here are pill-pushers just like the ones in the US. I am sure there are many exceptions in both countries and hope to find them. It is true here that most doctors are specialists and there is no effort at coordinated care on the Mayo or Cleveland clinic model. At least none that I have heard about.

There are some excellent orthopedic specialists in Thailand and a number of Tv members have been quite staisfied with care received from same. As with any doctor, careful selection is important.

With no information as to the nature of the OP's problem, the qualifications of the doctor he saw nor exactly what treatment was advised it is impossible to comment on his particular issue.

+1 for doc panya from bumrungrad hospital. He did my knee cartilage and cruciate ligament and my mate's and his mate's. No complaints. A thorough professional in my opinion. MRI was done beforehand.
