Even if there are butts on the ground. Being a foreigner it would look bad on me and perhaps reenforce a negative perception. Sure there is a time once a month or so where no one is around and the area is trashed anyway that I might flick one, but it's seldom the case. I'm a cheap mofo so I don't want to pay any fine, inflated or not! Your point about the lack of bins is spot on! I've learned to look for ashtrays and no smoking signs. These officers lurk outside office buildings and shopping centers, waiting for a farang to light up. They stalk these farangs like prey until they discard the butt onto the filthy footpath or sewer. When was the last time you ventured from, lets say Asoke to Nana? Using your figures, that would mean every three minutes someone is being hit up for a 2k fine. I was in this area three times in the last week, at various times, and I didnt pass people being hit on for throwing cigarette butts on the road. The people you mention arent police, they are from the tessabaan, they are usually sat outside of Suk soi 17, usually they are too busy joking with themselves and reading Thai sports papers. If you talk to them they arent the jackbooted fascists some make them out to be, just regular guys doing their job. Some of the posters may do well to consider another alterantive for their next holiday destination, thankfully Thailand hasnt yet reached the "Big Brother" knows best mentallity of some of our Farangsteins. Of course not i was online and reading this thread. But could you give a comment on why you would not use a mobile ashtray so you don't litter ? Why if you know this problem presents itself in Thailand would you not take steps to combat it by using a ashtray as i have shown pictures off. Mobile ashtray fits in your pocket. I pass it regularly. It's only there during office hours. There is a notice behind the desk saying it's an offense to littler and the fine is 2,000 bht. whybother Posted August 15, 2012 Share Posted August 15, 2012 Unbelievable- I was outside an office in Bangkok today when i got a tap on the shoulder and a telling of and fine by to police officers.Even though one of them was smoking and there was cig ends all over the floor. What could i do in the face of obvious extortion, i paid. As anybody else had experiences similar to this? And what have they done? What you could have done is put the butt in the bin.
