I plan to cross the border into Burma at Mae Sai and stay in Tachilek on the other side. I believe this is possible for a stay of 15 days or less but you're not permitted to travel beyond Tachilek (neither an issue for me).

What I'd like to know is whether I'll be issued with a visa or can I just expect the usual in / out stamps for Burma, as if entering and leaving again the same day?

Thanks for any help

Morning,

Its been a few years since we did that trip but it was a good one.

We only visited tachilek for the day, if I remember right we had to be back before 6pm, my wife got her visa at the border just by showing her Id card and I was issued a pass which I had to collect on the bridge which connects the 2 countries, I remember it did not seen so official at the time but it was 8 years ago. Tachilek is a typical border town, all hustle and bustle and we stayed there about a couple of hours in total as my wife felt unsafe, I think it was so different to thailand.

The best part of the trip was the guesthouse on the river overlooking burma, amazing, with a little veranda over the water, although a lot of activity at night with people crossing the river illegally.

Like I say, 8years ago and I'm sure its changed a bit.

Kind regards

I've been to Tachileik about three times, the first time was in 2002 before the Mae Sai crossing was declared a legal entry/exit point for travellers. If I remember correctly, Thai immigration held foreign passports at their office and you had to be back in Thailand the same day.

In 2007 and currently it is possible to spend 14 days in the Shan state of Myanmar for a fee of US$10. Prior to that time, as was the case in 2005 on my previous visit, you would declare whether you wanted to spend 1 day for US$5 or 14 days for US$10. If you want to stay 14 days, you are permitted to stay either in Tachileik or travel up to the Chinese border near Daluo, which is about a 60-90 min drive west of Jinghong in Sipsongbanna (but not across it, since that crossing is not a designated international crossing) and you must leave Myanmar the way you came, via Mae Sai. In fact, Myanmar immigration will hold your passport in the meantime. I believe you might need a guide if you leave Tachileik.

For Thais, one day passes are available upon showing their ID card or passport. For 14 day stays, the requirements are much the same as for third party foreign nationals, that is, payment of US$10 to Myanmar immigration and a stamp in their passports, which will be held at immigration in the meantime.

No visa will be stamped into your passport, just an entry stamp with a 14 day stay permission followed by an exit stamp. Due to the security situation in Myanmar and these requirements (outlined above) you are not legally allowed to travel to say Yangon or Mandalay on this 14 day visa on arrival permit.

just search forum and found this post.

does anyone can update me whether the regulations to over-stay in Tachileik is still the same?

can i move around in Tachileik by myself or must i recruit a tour guide to follow me throughout the entire trip in Tachileik?

i m planning to go there in march and would like to stay a week there. i don't want to apply day pass and return to mae sai everyday.

thank you
