Ok, but I was actually asking for a bit more detail than that, i.e. what letters and numbers represent which provinces, production years, etc. Does anyone know?

Sent from my GT-I9300T using Thaivisa Connect App

There is no 'Production Year' letter, plates are issued sequentially (except for 'special numbers'. The province where the vehicle is registered is at the bottom. Different colour combinations indicate type of vehicle, Green on White = pickup. Black on white passenger car (note 4 door pick up is plated as passenger car. Pre 1997 (I think) Plates only had one letter. Already quoted url's give further info.

Re: kartman:

That's how I learned to read years ago. The most frequent name below is probably the name of the province you are in right now. So now guess the letters, it makes a nice game on long trips throughout the country. "Nakhon Phanom" is an example for the entertaining writing of Thai.

They are just that letters and numbers plus the province (originally from) for the vehicle they are on nothing more.

Uh, no. There's a lot more to it than that. Have a look at, for example:

http://en.wikipedia....tes_of_Thailand

http://www.worldlice...ld/AS_THAI.html

http://www.licensepl...as/thailand.htm

I am interested in the 'designer' license plates that I have seen in various provinces.

Does anyone know of a web link that displays pictures of these 'designer' license plates and their cost?

How do drivers order them?

The "designer" plates are put up for auction in each province usually once a year, expect to pay in excess of a million baht for 999, 444, 1010 , that's just how it is, sweet talk your car salesman when you are buying new and you might get your birthday or some other significant date for you, but don't pay extra till you see what you get, they will tell you "special number for you" <deleted> not true!!

Thanks...for that!

I personally am only interested in the colorful design of the plates - none of that superstitious / good-luck stuff for me and If it takes an 'auction' to own designer plates, I guess I will lose out too, because again, I can't see paying a ridiculously high amount for a 'license plate'.

Maybe you can actually get just the plate?? i do seem to recall seeing them on display in one of the accessory shops on Sukhumvit in Pattaya, not sure how they would go about stamping your number on to the plate though?

Then again maybe not!!! just found this which seems to say they can only be bought at auction. http://driving.information.in.th/license-plates.html

Wherever they are available they are legal...you just have to pay 800-1000 Baht(not sure) extra for them...of course,if you want the "special Thai lucky number",that will cost much more smile.png
