Why don't we try this over in the communications and technology forum. OK?

As an aside, when I visited Europe 2 years ago I just got a sim card from one of the local suppliers and filled it up with some minutes. I tend to prefer something like Skype for long calls. Quite cheap. You can also get calling cards used via toll free numbers. A few other options...

Get a sim in the UK cost 99p (about 50 baht), calls will be around 1p per minute if you get the right one. Just need to look a little.

Rynga.com, buy 10 euro credit and get free calls to UK and Thailand for 4 months... after that .02 euro (to Thai) per minute until credit runs out.

If you have a smartphone, can install the Rynga app as well and use it like a normal phone call (eg, w/o computer and headset/mic)

Downside is that you need to have internet or 3g connection at least.

I use Vectone sim card. Free sim contact via net, calls to thai landlines 1p min, mobiles 2-3p min, Top up at lots of corner shops, with £10 voucher lasts for ages. Also cheap for UK to UK calls. Most important a nice clear line. I phone my wife in Issan regular.

I use icard mobile which is 2-3 pence to mobiles. No connection fee so short calls will always beat the landlines at 1p but adding a connection charge.

sorry, i must rescind my recommendation for Rynga... i don't know if all Betamax are like this, but I've used it approximately 30 minutes a day total...maybe less...maybe 5 or 6 calls a day... edit: just counted minutes used...in the last 10 days, LESS than 130 minutes...

they now say I've "exceeded their fair use policy" and will be charged for calls now on to what should be free (108 freedays left out of 120..so basically got 12 days "free")...shame on these turds. Do not use. SCAM.

Free Option: Skype Video Calls

No access to Internet or your on the go:

Your best option are cheap calling cards (which have toll free numbers or a local call) You will find these easy at your local corner store, as you will notice the plaster of signs if they do it.

VOIP:

Voip Buster Pro: Free calls to thailand land/mobile (300mins per week) Theres many spin offs of these same companys, so check the rates and time length info. Worth having if you need to make calls back home also. To make it easier just buy a SIP box and plug in with your existing landline.

VOIPs also good for making long calls to mobiles in Thailand.
