webfact
Woman forced to eat MAGGOTS while locked up in Thai prison for NINE YEARS after trying to smuggle heroin into the U.S. Angela Carnegie, from Chicago, agreed to carry suitcase lined with drugs Sentenced to life in prison in 1993 at the infamous 'Bangkok Hilton' jail By EMILY ANNE EPSTEIN and LOUISE BOYLE BANGKOK: -- When Angela Carnegie made the disastrous decision to smuggle heroin from Thailand, she had no idea how much worse her life could get. After being caught at Bangkok airport, she was sentenced to life in a Thai prison in 1993 - where she was forced to eat rotting food teeming with maggots, sleep next to prisoners with leprosy and survive without running water. Carnegie, from Chicago, was in her twenties and had just broken up with a serious boyfriend. Feeling vulnerable, she decided to take up a friend's offer for some quick cash by bringing a suitcase lined with drugs back to the U.S. Thai officials spotted her immediately at the airport and she was arrested. She sentenced to life at the infamous 'Bangkok Hilton' prison. Her experiences have been chronicled on National Geographic show 'Locked Up Abroad,' a series about inmates who have endured the hardships of foreign prisons. 'The conditions were very crowded, dirty, and unsanitary,' Ms Carnegie said of her experience on her Facebook page. 'We showered outside rain or shine, often times standing in floating sewage which overflowed from the sewage canal that ran all around the edge of the prison.' Popular Post PattayaPhom
Why do they let these scumbags out after only a short time. She didnt care about the problems her actions would inflict on others so she should still be rotting there now!!!

Khun Jean
At least they know how to punish people. Now get that guilty/not guilty thing in order so that only guilty people end up in prison

Popular Post phosphorescent
That is exactly how all prisons around the world should be! Squalid and uninviting. Edited August 30, 2012 by phosphorescent
Hart
She doesn't look that different now. She actually looks chubbier. You can google for her after picture. (I tried to post a link but I couldn't.) BTW, she's somewhat lucky; her penalty would have been death if she got caught in Singapore or Malaysia.

bangkokburning
Difficult to empathize. Most people are in prison because they are stupid. Even the smarter crims know how to get off. Smuggling is just plain wack. Why? Well one reason is they lock you up in horrible conditions and feed you maggots. I presumed the same, but the caption in the article is that is her in 2002 when she was released..... after 9 years at Bang Kwang. Bizarre that she was that heavy after such a long stretch at the Hilton. Viktor Bout lost like 70 pounds from a much shorter stay. In another video of her story, http://channel.natio...vous-breakdown/ she's lucky she wasn't charged with attempted murder of another inmate during her incarceration. . Popular Post Pseudolus
Good chance she has an untreated thyroid condition. the excuse of all who like good food and a lot of it I don't think her being fat (if she was) had anything to do with the conditions she was in. I doubt she had relatives able to send her lots of money to help her out, and therefore to make fun of her on this basis is very low indeed. She did a stupid thing, went through an ordeal brought on by those acts, and then has people laughing at her. If she was your sister you might hope she had better conditions than this and people were not laughing about the woeful life she has led for the past years. Shame on you.

Ohyesuare
Maybe she refers to the other prisoners as maggots? At least she kept the prison from being overcrowded since she took the space of 5.
softgeorge
This is the "Before", photo. Well if that is the before pic, then I guess that prison life on just a few maggots was probably very benifical for her. p_brownstone
In another video of her story, http://channel.natio...vous-breakdown/ she's lucky she wasn't charged with attempted murder of another inmate during her incarceration. . If that really happened and is not just another story from this blimp she's very lucky she was not severely beaten - or worse - by a gang of other Thai inmates for that assault; Thais tend to stick together, particularly against obnoxious Farang.
