Police in Rangoon’s Bahan Township rejected a request by farmers from the Hukawng Valley in Kachin State to hold a protest in front of the Yuzana Hotel, saying the demonstration would obstruct traffic, according to a report by Mizzima. The farmers, who are trying to highlight the issue of land confiscation in their home state by the Yuzana Company and the Burmese military, said they would go ahead with the planned protest. Yuzana and the Burmese army are accused of seizing more than 1,000 acres of land in the Hukawng Valley since 2007.
