Things We Love About Chiang Mai

According to those girls, we are all seedy ex-pats.

I think their interpretation of seedy is any guys that are 50 or over. In they’re opinion they probably think that all male ex-pats should be dead and buried, or humanely put down or incarcerated and taken out of society by the time they reach 45.

The sight of so many young Thai girls walking about seemed to offend them. Perhaps they were afraid of the competition. Beautiful young Thai girls vs. Vegetarian, frigid, holier than thou attitude farang girls. Sorry no contest.

But the number one factor that they didn’t like about Chiang Mai was its location, as they much prefer the resorts with beaches. Why not construct a private women only beach resort on the outskirts of Chiang Mai? Where they can all be special friends together, shielded from the people and men beasts that scare and irritate them in the outside world.

If these girls consider Chiang Mai as seedy, than Heaven forbid that these daughters of wholesomeness and goodness, unblemished by the touches and sexual desires of the depraved male species should ever visit the lust dens and hellfire provinces of Pattaya. I think someone should warn them.

I read the article and here’s what I think of it so far: Rubbish.

BTW, what`s a Hipster?

maybe the first time a post of yours has been worth the read thumbsup.gif

hipsters are the "in" and trendy crowd. someone who thinks that nimmanhaemin is real thailand needs to probably get their head out of their ass.

Good grief, you do manage to be a negative bitter mysogynist kind of chap at times ain'tcha.. wink.png

Here's a topic on a wonderful experience two tourists had, with stunning pictures; really the ultimate answer to send to anyone who might ask "So.. why Chiang Mai?" and you manage to focus on the token piece of criticism, included to balance out the blog post.

Sheesh!

Winnie has the right of it. Two kids admiring the town as if tourists having a fine time and taking photos to show why.

But also, why not admit that nowhere in the West, nowhere, do we see so many men of mature age with so many women notably younger? Seniorish sexpats (with a number of incarnations, sometimes married with kids) are all around us, if not us. Sounds to me as if someone's feeling insulted, as if they could not get a young clingy female to hang upon them back in the home nation (money relationships? what, no trophy wives?)

Plus, who among us can deny that most bars where Westerners are to be found feature an obvious but significant number of men who look more worn than age itself should reveal?

so a trophy wife is only acceptable in one's home country? is there a certain $ investment amount that makes it ok in your eyes? you can find the same social environment all across the West. Guessing you've never been to Vegas, to Rome, to Rio.

sure, the bar scene doesnt exactly personify "class", but then if one's goal is to find class thailand would be way down the list of destinations.

let people live their lives. no use in looking 20 years younger than you are when you die.

Totally agree. A really positive post of their experience in Chiangmai and out come the posters come to muck it up. Thanks Winnie for posting the article.

Yes, from now on all posts should be "happy posts" smile.png that have only positive things in them. Only good news as well. Nothing negative at all.

But also, why not admit that nowhere in the West, nowhere, do we see so many men of mature age with so many women notably younger?

I used to see then on TV and in the newspapers every day!

Let me see, and the age difference .......

Prince Charles + Lady Diana Spencer (+13)

Rod Stewart + various blondes

Bill Wyman + Mandy Smith (wasn't she 13 at the time?) (+34)

Michael Douglas + Catherine Zeta Jones (+25)

Anne Nichole Smith + Howard Marshall (+63)

Rupert Murdock + Wendy Deng (+37)

Clint + Dina Eastwood (+35)

If it's OK for the future King of England, pop stars, etc., how come you never noticed it happening?

But it's a big leap from Rod Stewart + various blondes or Clint + Dina Eastwood to Angus Hilldorfer & his Issan girl who are living in Chiang Mai on his Aussie disability pension.

So it's OK when the filthy rich men prey on much younger women?

In each case the woman gets a house and a pay-off, is it really that different?

No, and it's not better or worse, and actually I don't think that older men are preying on anyone in either case. But I do think that it's a lot more prevalent in Chaing Mai and more low-end. While I'd agree is it's not right to call it a downside to Chiang Mai as the authors of that piece did and that it's better to live and let live, it is in fact a conspicuous aspect of many places in Thailand that dodgy old Westerners are treated like rock or movie stars by young bimbos.

Yes, and thank God for that!!

Once again, I didn't say that there was anything wrong with that.

Hey, I could not help rejoicing spontaneously over the main reason I moved here!

WinnieThe Kwai,

I thought you were smarter than the average buffalo!!! But you have been sucked in! Your article in the original post is obviously SPAM!!!!

spamsign.gif

Can't really blame this on TAT. Too sophisticated!

As usual, the conversation has taken all sorts of curious directions, but back to the message. The little dig at dirty old men gives the message certain verisimilitude! There are, after all, a lot of fellows walking around eager to find someone to scratch their itch whose dress does not reflect the traditional cultural norms! It is clever because the town would like to attract solid sorts with money to spend, not people who argue the size of a gratuity to be left on a 200 bhat chit! Dirty old men are rather off-putting.

One wonders if our erstwhile Northern Thai native son, Thaksin, hasn't started laying out another tourism plan using some more sophisticated approaches than Thai versions of casinos, Disneyland parks and an aerial tramway up the East face of Doi Suthep! His earlier efforts, which lured in a lot of 5-star hotels and created the Night Safari, have been wanting by those sucked in! But Chiang Mai did get such lovely cultural features as McDonalds and megamalls! Want more? sick.gif

Sounds like he has a hard on and they are dis ing him. A very great post.

Not often you see a great post about a place that also talks of some of the things they don't care for. Most posters would just talk about the positive things.

Isn't that the place where a lot of animals died and escaped?

It's doing reasonably well these days. And there is a lot of free and cheap stuff there that's fun for kids. Like watching the deer, feeding giraffes and looking at some of the animals in the area outside the main entrance, including white tigers.

Where else can you go and find so many unhappy people about the horrible conditions they live in.

And you know it is a choice they made. I highly doubt any of them were thrown out of their own country and condemned to live in Chiang Mai.

whos complaining? the criticism is pointed at the self-righteous femmes with no perspective or life experience, not at chiang mai. if anything, the posters are DEFENDING cm.

I also think the article was well-written and very positive towards Chiang Mai. Good that they also included a few of their perceived negatives. I think travel writing should be more balanced and include the good aspects along with the less than desirable as well.

Good job.

I liked some of it but I could't belive they were pissed off the place didn't have a beach.

Gees.. didn't have a beach, like <deleted> is that supposed to mean ?

I heard that once in Mexico City and almost shit myself, you wish Mexico City would have a beach.

I wish New York City had a mountain and a hotspring and was warm all year with beach huts and had some free airplane tickets.

The authors of the article are lesbians and maybe that's the reason they don't want men here in Chiang Mai.

Yes, pick up Chiang Mai, put it down by the beach, get rid of the men, and then it would be a lesbian's paradise.

CM is big enough for all of us: Gays, lesbians, transgendered, and seedy old expats like myself as well.

I'll be happy to leave when Thai Immigration tells me they don't want me to stay, but not until then.

Maybe they are lesbians, but how many young heterosexual farang women do you know that think that the single retired men are handsome men?

depends how rich they are
