India has donated over US $200,000 to be divided between Arakanese and Rohingya victims of the sectarian violence that has plagued northwestern Burma in recent months, according to a report in the Times of India. New Delhi’s ambassador to Burma, V. Seshadri, handed the donation over to Arakan Chief Minister Hla Maung Tin who in turn presented it to representatives of both communities at a function in state capital Sittwe. India has seen a slow but progressive stream of Rohingya refugees into the country in the past few years. Violence flared at a protest by the Muslim minority group in Mumbai last month leading to the loss of two lives. During the first visit by an Indian premier to Burma in 25 years, Burmese President Thein Sein in May assured Manmohan Singh that Burma will not allow its territory to be used against India by any insurgent group.
