Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yubamrung lashed out at Burmese and Vietnamese authorities for not doing enough to curtail the production of drugs, following the seizure of 3.3 million amphetamine pills in Bangkok. He said that the speed pills were being manufactured by the United Wa State Army in northern Shan State, but that the production base of many base chemicals had relocated to Vietnam after Thai government efforts to block the trafficking of pseudoephedrine had been successful. Chalerm said he had raised the matter with his Burmese counterparts at a recent Asean ministers meeting, and that he intended to seek China’s support in working with Burmese authorities to curb drug trafficking.
