September 20, 201213 yr just wondered if anyone else has noticed the "tesco get out" posters around phuket town.
September 20, 201213 yr Most likely left over from last month's protests ---> http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/578674-tesco-lotus-counters-protests-against-phuket-town-project/
September 20, 201213 yr Many restaurants don't favor Tesco in town. The markets serve the area and cheaper and fresher. Tesco will just import substandard veggies from China and price the locals out. I'm all for it being not built in town Edited September 20, 201213 yr by hansgruber

I'm all for it being not built in town is supercheap a foriegn company? do they not import anything from china ? Wasn't talking about supercheap. I.was talking a out the fresh food market in town where the buses depart, just up from the roundabout at Rassada Rd.
September 20, 201213 yr In every province that Tesco operate in they face or have faced protests. Their cutting of margins ends the lack of competition for various wholesalers, retailers and market owners. In fact, in virtually every sector in Thailand, there are vested interests and cartels doing their damnedest to stifle any kind of free market and competition ensuring the Thai consumer pays an extra 15-20% over a realistic price.

September 20, 201213 yr Unlike the mom and pop shops, Tesco pays taxes. It is not the expat community that keeps Tesco in business, it's the Thai consumers. I think it should be their choice. It would be interesting to find out why Thais shop at Tesco. Personally, I shop at a variety of places. I'm fairly close to the main SuperCheap and go there a lot more than I go to Tesco. I do like having the option from time to time.

Where did you come up with this "fact"?

I'm all for it being not built in town We occasionally use the large fresh market near Robinsons in Phuket Town, and excellent though it is, by 9 a.m. every morning, it's finished, empty, and being washed down ready for the next day. I don't use Tesco very often, but when I have, and judging by the selection and volume and products in the typical Thai trolleys, there's an awful lot of Mom's and Pop's being replenished by them. The proposed site in Phuket Town is currently a large vacant lot, and there are very few other provision stores in that particular area.

Tesco draw customers in by offering cheap prices on some items, a huge variety in their stock and make it easier for shoppers as they are able to get pretty much everything they need in the one shop. Additionally, it is air-conditioned and a relatively pleasant environment compared to markets. I appreciate all of the above, but think shoppers assume that all their prices are cheap - they are not.... I find some items either the same price or cheaper in one of my local mom and pop stores! Personally, I prefer to give my money to a small operation rather than a large corporation - so buy what I can at the mom and pop store and the things I am unable to buy there, I buy at Tesco.
September 21, 201213 yr What about our HP sauce ? Best price at the main Supercheap store but they keep shifting it around the store and i have not been able to find it the last couple of times we have been there As far as a lot of items go our local mom and pop store quite often has prices as good and sometimes better than the large super markets Edited September 21, 201213 yr by petercallen

Pretty much all the things one local mom and pop store (near me) sells (that I buy), are either the same price or CHEAPER than Tesco! Unfortunately, they only have a small range of items.
September 22, 201213 yr Tesco cheap......shop at the markets or independant malss and Tesco seems expensive...A few items such as cooking oild, sugar and fish sauce may be comparable butthats about it.
September 22, 201213 yr Why is it that Tesco always catches flak when it wants to open a store, yet, the true culprit behind the closures of "mom "n" pop" stores, the mini-marts of all companies, nary a word is said?
September 22, 201213 yr Why is it that Tesco always catches flak when it wants to open a store, yet, the true culprit behind the closures of "mom "n" pop" stores, the mini-marts of all companies, nary a word is said? 'Cos your average Thai knows not to organise protests against CP. Too powerful. Thais don't like to make enemies of powerful Thais. You can guarantee all these anti-Tesco/Big C/Carrefour protests have been organised by local 'politicians' and they expect to receive a cash payoff from the aforementioned supermarket companies.

Obviously you don't seem to know that CP is Tesco's Thai partner in Tesco-Lotus. Therefore, your answer isn't really valid, is it?

CP sold its shares in 2003 so you seem to be 9 years out of date, don't you?

September 23, 201213 yr Tesco will be a nice addition to the landscape of Phuket town. Some items are hard to find in those small shops around town. With the huge parking lots in Tesco it will be easy for people who drives. Local wet market always have insufficient parking lots.
September 23, 201213 yr At least all local Tesco has basic fire safety measures in place ..the main Supercheap branch is a huge fire disaster waiting to happen, as I have written many times in this forum (and alluded to in others). If a fire ever broke out near the main entrances, which is not unlikely given all the people cooking over open flames thereabouts, the death toll could be in the thousands: worse than OG269 and the tsunami (Phuket death toll) combined... Getting out of that place is hard enough even when it is not on fire. I feel like I have cheated death every time I walk out of there. If any Phuket retail outlet, real or planned, is in need of a protest it is Supercheap and the fire safety disaster that can (and probably will) happen there unless someone in power does something about it. Isn't it time they just turned that place into a warehouse for their ever- expanding "convenience" store" operation?
